Five Questions with Author Selena Laurence
Q1. First let’s talk just writing in general. Do you
have a certain process—outlines, times of day that the ideas flow best, etc?
A. I usually write in the afternoon. Right now I'm
doing 2k words a day five days a week, and I often sprint with an online group
(write as fast as you can for thirty minutes straight). I can get 1700-2000
words in the ninety minutes at my kids' soccer practice. LOL
Q2. Since the Lush series is set around a
band, what music influences you? What are your favorite bands?
A. I'm easy to please. Right now I love Coldplay,
Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Stevie Rae Vaughn, Lukas Nelson (Willie's son),
Lorde, and Florida Georgia Line.
Q3. Joss is such a well developed character—he’s
tormented; he’s deep; (he’s also pretty hot!) How did you come up with him? Is
he based on anyone you know or a rock star you admire?
A. Thanks for all of that! And no, he's not based on
anyone. He looks a lot like Jared Leto in my head, but I don't know anything
about Jared Leto as a person. Joss is the character that came to me the easiest
and just flowed. He popped into my head out of nowhere, and he was pretty much
fully formed. He's the most real to me, and I think he's probably some deep
hidden part of me!
Q4. The story has a great balance of fun scenes (Joss’s
panty rant to the driver), poignant scenes (the big reveal), and some brewing
sexual tension scenes (the pool). What was your favorite scene to write?
A. You know, I don't usually have favorites. I did
like the panty rant, and the one where Joss says, "Welcome to rock and
roll baby" or something like that. Sometimes I crack myself up. Not sure
if anyone else thinks it's funny, but it keeps me entertained. ;)
It was! That was a great line and such a rock star thing for him to say to her!
Q5. I would definitely like to read more about Joss
and Mel to see them negotiate all the plans they
outline at the end and the new
adventures they undertake. Any plans for another book focused on them?
And what can you tell us about Lowdown and Lush (#3)
and A Lush Reunion (#4)?
Lowdown and Lush is being written right now and what
I'll tell you is that it reveals all of Mike's secrets, so you'll finally
understand his sometimes crappy behavior. As for Lush 4, I hope it'll wrap up
everyone's loose ends, and provide the ultimate HEA for the entire band and
their girls. I have thought of some possible spin offs from Lush into another
series, so if that happens it'll be set up in Lush 4.
