REVIEW/RELEASE BLITZ: Beautiful Beast by Aubrey Irons

Genre: Contemporary Romance

~Blurb~

Anastasia:
Here’s the first thing you should know: this is not a fairytale. Happily-ever-afters are fables, and Prince Charming is a sweet little lie. I know all this because he taught me.

Once upon a lifetime ago, the rich, arrogant, sinfully gorgeous, and tragically broken dark prince of the Hamptons was my tormentor. My darkness, my shameful attraction, my all-consuming, forbidden temptation.

I hate Sebastian Crown because nine years ago, for one night, I was stupid enough to think I loved him. And I’ve been paying for it ever since.

Except now, he needs me to help him save his empire.…And he’s not taking no for answer.

Bastian:
She’s my nemesis. My addiction. My weakness.

My obsession.

I used to tell myself I hated Anastasia Bell - for being poor, for not worshipping the ground I walked on, for looking at me like she pitied me for being me.

When the rest of my world always told me yes, she was the ever-provoking no.

She thinks I’m a monster - a tragic, fucked-up, broken beast. She doesn’t know the half of it. Because she can’t begin to know the crimes of my past, or imagine the things I’ve done to her behind the scenes since she left this place.

Years ago, I thought breaking her would fix me. I was wrong.

Now I’ve got her in my sights again, and this time, I won’t be letting her go. Even if it means we both go down in flames...

~Book Review~
5 Stars

Anastasia Bell, 27, the gardener’s daughter on an expansive Hampton’s estate, grew up with the rich and privileged kids, but she was never one of them. 9 years ago she left it all behind until she’s presently summoned back to the Crown mansion in dire straits.
“I also have no idea how I’d explain that I’m currently living in the opulent estate of an eccentric, brooding, asshole millionaire who may or may not be both the bane of my existence and also my horrible secret fantasy.”
Sebastian Crown, 27, is broken and sadistic. Troubled would be putting it mildly. Bastian has so many vices and exalts in debauchery as the sexy, spoiled rich boy looming over the mansion.
“There was no ‘raising’ Sebastian Crown. There was just damage control.”
By most accounts, Bastian shouldn’t be likable. He should be deplorable and pathetic, but just as Ana is drawn to him, even fascinated by him, I was too!
I noticed right away that the prose was well written. It flows well, the descriptions are compelling, the narration is entertaining, and the dialogue/banter fresh, at places even humorous.
“‘Why are you going out of your way to be an asshole?’
‘It’s not out of the way at all, don’t sweat it.’”
The many layers of character development and suspense plot kept me glued to the pages. A few chapters became the entire book, read in one long sitting because I couldn’t put it down! The suspense angle is well crafted. My mouth dropped in “ah” several times as I began connecting the dots. There’s even a plot trope that I’ve never much cared for, one I’ve found usually comes off hokey and actually takes away from the romance, yet it works here; it works well, adding another layer to their complicated courtship and a cuteness to their resolution.

Told via Ana and Bastian’s first person POV, the story rotates between the present and the past, providing their sorted history while advancing their love-hate relationship in the current timeline. There’s no insta-love or insta-lust here; it’s all well developed.  It’s more than a decade of fixation, animosity, depravity, and obsession with the chemistry palpable and the reader wondering both Did they? and Are they going to?
“‘I’m fairly certain my dirty mouth only makes you wetter than you’ve ever been before.’”
While Sebastian reeled me in, his boundaries seemingly limitless, I was impressed with how Ana had the brass to give right back. She held her own pretty well when considering the intimidating nature of Bastian’s character; she never had blinders on, nor was she afraid to call him out.

The story has plenty of twists and turns. And while it’s far from upbeat or light-hearted, I never felt the angst was overdone or unnecessary. Bastian has a shitstorm mess on his hands, but it didn’t feel contrived. He largely reaped what he sowed, and as a fabulous dark hero, he owned it too.

It’s a tale of redemption and finding the thing money can’t buy.  Amidst suppressed feeling and psychological torment, the duo’s sexual encounters are dirty and hot.
“‘I was talking about making you come all over my fingers and then licking it off while you tongue my balls. Who said anything about romance.’”
I’d best categorize this as a romantic suspense standalone as well as dark romance. His intentions are selfish and destructive, but there’s an undercurrent of that four letter word in the motivations.  I was pleased with the ending and how things worked out. In fact, it ties together perfectly. That’s not to say I didn’t still crave more saucy interludes with Ana and Bastian as well as more about his friends (one in particular). The four princes of South Neck could make an interesting series. While there were a few aspects not to my preferences, the well plotted, captivating tale made them easier to overlook. This is my first book by this author, but I’ll definitely be checking out her other reads.

COVER REVEAL: Tormentor Mine by Anna Zaires

Cover Design by: Najla Qamber Designs
Genre: Dark Romance
Release Date: March 28, 2017

~Blurb~
A new dark romance from New York Times bestseller Anna Zaires

He came to me in the night, a cruel, darkly handsome stranger from the most dangerous corners of Russia. He tormented me and destroyed me, ripping apart my world in his quest for vengeance.

Now he's back, but he’s no longer after my secrets.

The man who stars in my nightmares wants me.

~Excerpt~
from Peter’s POV

“Are you going to kill me?”

She’s trying—and failing—to keep her voice steady. Still, I admire her attempt at composure. I approached her in public to make her feel safer, but she’s too smart to fall for that. If they’ve told her anything about my background, she must realize I can snap her neck faster than she can scream for help.

“No,” I answer, leaning closer as a louder song comes on. “I’m not going to kill you.”

“Then what do you want from me?”

She’s shaking in my hold, and something about that both intrigues and disturbs me. I don’t want her to be afraid of me, but at the same time, I like having her at my mercy. Her fear calls to the predator within me, turning my desire for her into something darker.

She’s captured prey, soft and sweet and mine to devour.

Bending my head, I bury my nose in her fragrant hair and murmur into her ear, “Meet me at the Starbucks near your house at noon tomorrow, and we’ll talk there. I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.”

I pull back, and she stares at me, her eyes huge in her pale face. I know what she’s thinking, so I lean in again, dipping my head so my mouth is next to her ear.

“If you contact the FBI, they’ll try to hide you from me. Just like they tried to hide your husband and the others on my list. They’ll uproot you, take you away from your parents and your career, and it will all be for nothing. I’ll find you, no matter where you go, Sara… no matter what they do to keep you from me.” My lips brush against the rim of her ear, and I feel her breath hitch. “Alternatively, they might want to use you as bait. If that’s the case—if they set a trap for me—I’ll know, and our next meeting won’t be over coffee.”

She shudders, and I drag in a deep breath, inhaling her delicate scent one last time before releasing her.

Stepping back, I melt into the crowd and message Anton to get the crew into positions.

I have to make sure she gets home safe and sound, unmolested by anyone but me.

BOOK REVIEW: His Doll by Isabella Starling

~Blurb~

How does that make you feel, doll?

JACOB
Don't fall for the patient.
Don't fall for the pretty, broken, sweet little doll sitting across from you in the office.
Don't fall for her lies.
Don't fall for her looks.
Most of all, don't fall for her deliciously broken mind.
But life keeps throwing Alice at me, and her naturally submissive nature makes her such easy prey...
And after all, the broken ones are the most fun to train.

ALICE
Jacob Hawke can only ever be a crush.
He's been my therapist for years.
Now, my mother wants me to live with him while she chases her dream job in another state.
Mr. Hawke has been trying to put me back together for a long time now.
Maybe he was supposed to break me all along.

Full-length novel. Standalone, no cliffhanger. HEA guaranteed.
~Review~
4 Stars

Alice Leroux is a troubled eighteen year old senior, the daughter of a celebrity newscaster. Upon her mother’s decision to take a job in New York, Alice is left in the care of her therapist, now guardian, Mr. Jacob Hawke.

Alice and Jacob put a little different spin on the typical push/pull romantic attraction. Alice spews hate towards him one second; then she’s seducing him the next.  It’s a twisted game they are playing, and Jacob certainly desires her; he’s just old enough to know it’s inappropriate.
“She’s a fucking doll, all pretty and perfect, but hollow on the inside. I want to fill her up.”
I’m not exactly sure that Alice ever fully works through her complicated issues or that she gets the therapy she needs. There’s a slight lack of back-story development on the part of both characters. As a psychological romance it would have been helpful to perhaps have more insight (particularly from Jacob as her therapist) into Alice’s troubles as well as explanation as to how Jacob developed his particular sexual proclivities. There’s a clue dropped that’s never fully explained. None the less, they seem to be what each other needs to find happiness, and their taboo relationship is a engaging tale.
“She’s so fucking perfect, already so damn submissive, and she’s not even on her knees yet…But I’ll have to change that soon.”
Obviously they give in to their desire, and the story spins hot and dirty. Some aspects of their sex life seemed a little…far fetched? Exaggerated for sure. But it’s not lacking any steam.
“‘I’m gonna play with my pretty doll now,…Because this is how we play at my house.’”
The “dark” angle of the romance comes mostly from the unethical relationship that Alice and Jacob engage in.  But it ends on an upbeat outcome so no depressing book hangovers here thankfully.  I do wish someone…anyone would have picked up on the bullying that Alice endures sooner. It seemed there was more to be explored there. Despite the age difference and that Jacob has been married before while Alice was a virgin, I didn’t find their experience as unbalanced as it would seem. It appeared they fit each other well and served needs that no one had fulfilled for them before.

Told via Jacob and Alice’s first person POV, His Doll is an erotic dark romance standalone.

BOOK REVIEW: Stepdaddy Savage by Charleigh Rose

~Blurb~

You do not say no to Graham Savage, because Graham Savage doesn’t ask. Just like his name suggests, he takes, and right now, he believes I’m his.

He is a cold, calculated, ruthless, formidable Irish mobster, and... my step-dad.

Regardless of the fact that it's nothing more than a business transaction, he's technically married to my mom. Even still, I find myself scared to be caught, yet even more terrified of being cut loose.

They say love is like a butterfly…well, we are about to prove to the world that it’s also like a punch in the face. Sometimes inevitable…and always painful.

~Review~
4 Stars

*This review may contain spoilers, but honestly I don’t think most prospective readers are picking this up for the plot twists.  Let’s face it, if you are considering reading this it’s because of the taboo smut factor. And if you’re reading the reviews it’s probably to decide how far out of your comfort zone this dirty read is going to push you.

None the less, I have to say aside from a few grammatical and minor continuity errors, this title was surprising well writing. It pulled me in right of the start, introduced intriguing characters, and built some major sexual tensions.

Does it deliver in the steam factor? Absolutely!  This book is hot! Like ‘wow is it warm in here?’ fans-self-hot.
“‘If you’re on fire for me now…Then wait till I fuck your brains out. You’ll motherfucking burn, baby.’”
Graham Savage, 32, most certainly rocks the ‘bad man’ (notice I didn’t say boy), take control, above the law, make no apologies, dark hero role. If you’re going to be a bad guy then own it, and Graham does. So I might have been crushing on him a bit myself. ;-)  And while Dahlia, 17/18, is a virgin, she wasn’t a weak, innocent, doormat heroine. Dahlia is sassy, smart-mouthed, and not above breaking the rules. Because of this, they worked together as a couple despite the age difference and the forbidden relationship as well as had some interesting “banter.”
“‘Good girl, Dolly. Now suck on how you make me feel.’”
There was one thing though that made me drop the rating from 5 stars to 4 stars. Surprisingly it was not:

The daddy kink—while I’m not typically a fan, it wasn’t too over the top. But more specifically I felt like Dahlia and Graham were role playing with it more than actually heavily into the idea since at several places they acknowledged the limited extent to their stepfather-daughter role. Bringing  me to the second thing that did not bother me…

Cheating—while I understand some readers won’t be able to get past the notion that Graham is legally married to Dahlia’s mother, I honestly didn’t find this an issue of cheating in this particular instance, nor did it gross me out since the marriage was never consummated. From what’s disclosed about Graham and Dahlia’s mother, their union is nothing more than a marriage of convenience, orchestrated by Graham to acquire citizenship and for some other benevolent reasons divulged in a romantic reveal. They do not sleep in the same bedroom nor have they ever had sexual relations, and once Dahlia is on the brink of turning eighteen, Graham begins the process of ending the marriage. Oh and Dahlia’s mother is screwing the pool boy. Bottom line, there’s no romantic or monogamous expectations in Graham’s on-paper only marriage.

What I did deduct a whole point for….
I was hugely disappointed when the overused, trite, h-is-about-to-get-raped by a creepy OM trope was introduced at 63%. To be clear, she thankfully is saved by Graham in time. But then of course, it continues the ridiculous resolution where the h is hardly traumatized and is still horny for the H. For authors who state in their bio that their philosophy is “fun, sexy, smut” that is “original” and that they “won't give you what you've already seen a million times before,” well they certainly missed those goals with this scene. This plot device isn’t original and has been done many times over.  But more importantly, attempted rape isn’t sexy!  I’ve ranted about books that use this unrealistic and unromantic plot climax in romance books before and it bears repeating. Rape/attempted rape/sexual assault does not belong in a romance novel and using it as simply a plot devices not only trivialized the real problem of sexual abuse against women, but contributes to a rape culture.  And from a reading perspective, it threw cold water on the build up to the H&h’s first time, completely taking me out of the erotic moment. Suddenly, I needed a sweater instead of a fan.

That scene aside, it was an engaging, taboo read told mainly by Dahlia’s first person POV (the epilogue is told by Graham). The main characters were great; they worked well together as a couple; the story was developed (even for being only around 100 pages); and I got a kick out of cheeky references like cum gun and Masturbationgate. The first in a standalone series, I’ll probably check out the next book, Savage Beast, about Dahlia’s friend and Graham’s "brother."

EXCERPT REVEAL: Dark Mafia Prince by Annika Martin

ExcerptReveal-BANNER
~Blurb~
Aleksio
Don’t look at me like that. So trusting.
Like you think I’m not a monster.
Like I won’t wrap your hair in my fist and bend you to my will.
Like I won’t sacrifice you, piece by piece, to save my brother.
I’m the most dangerous enemy you’ll ever have because every time you look at me, you see somebody good. That friend who died.
And when you look at me like that, I die again.

Mira
I spent years making myself invisible.
A good girl, apart from the noise.
Then you came back, beautiful and deadly in your Armani suit.
Don’t look at me like you still know me, you say.
But I remember your smile and those sunny days.
Before they lowered your small casket into the ground.
Before they told us the prince was dead.

GOODREADS
~EXCERPT #1~

I plead repeatedly for news of my father, if only to know he’s still alive. My captor just texts.
A crash from inside our mansion. They’re wrecking the place.
“This is pointless.” When he doesn’t acknowledge me, I grab his wrist. “What does this get you? Come on!”
He looks at my hand and then looks up at me. For a moment I think he, too, senses the weird familiarity between us. Like we know each other from another life. He drops his phone in his pocket and takes my wrists. “You need to stop focusing on your beautiful life in there and start praying that Daddy decides to come through.”
“Ow,” I breathe.
“Good. That’s you getting with the program. I’ll do whatever I have to do to get my brother back. Do I want to hurt you? No. I don’t. Will I?”
My heart races.
“Will I?”
“I get it,” I whisper.
His grip is too tight, his gaze too intense, like he sees everything inside me. People rarely look too hard at me. When they look at me at all, they accept the version of me I serve up to them. The shopaholic Mafia princess. The dedicated lawyer in glasses.
“Dad’s innocent. He’d tell you if he knew anything else.”
“Wrong, Kitten. Dad’s playing the odds.”
A ping sounds. He lets me go and pulls his phone out of his pocket. A twenty-first century general waging battle.
Whatever the person on the other ends has texted him, it troubles him.
That’s my chance—I take off running, tearing for the main road.
I get maybe ten feet when guys seem to materialize around me, taking me by the shoulders. I twist and fight. They lift me right off the ground, practically carry me back.
The strangely familiar intruder is still on the phone, eyeing me with that intensity, watching me struggle. A model between photo shoots if you didn’t know any better.
They put me back in front of him. He lowers the phone and addresses me quietly. “Do it. Go ahead, Mimi, do it again. See what happens.”
Mimi.
He blinks, waiting. “Do it, go for it.”
Mimi. Only one person ever called me Mimi—Aleksio Dragusha. My childhood friend. But Aleksio and his family were slaughtered by a rival clan back when we were kids.  I was wild with grief. They had to sedate me.
Five caskets lowered into the ground. Three small, two large.
I focus on the familiar freckle on his cheekbone. This man is so much bigger. So much harder and meaner. But his freckle…his eyes... “Aleksio?” I say in a small voice.
“Ding ding ding, we have a winner.” He says it off-handedly, keeping his eyes fixed on the mansion with its majestic stone wings. The house where he once lived. Prince of a mafia empire.
“Oh my God. Aleksio!”
Still he won’t look at me.
“We thought you were dead. We buried you.”
“You buried a few rocks. Maybe some boiled cabbages, who knows.”
I can’t believe he’s being so…flip. “Aleksio! We buried you.” I’m repeating myself. “I thought they killed you…” If my life were postcards on a bulletin board, the image of Aleksio Dragusha’s casket being covered up with dirt would be central, affecting everything around it. He was my best friend. I doubt I was his. Aleksio had lots of friends. Everybody loved Aleksio.
He focuses on his phone, running his soldiers.
“We went to your funeral. It was so, so…” Sad isn’t the word. Sad barely touches it. We were adventurers together, bonded together, carving out a sunny niche inside a world of darkness and secrets we sensed but didn’t understand. I think that’s what made us friends—the feeling of being refugees at the edges of something evil.
“Aleksio, you’re being crazy!”
He looks at me now like I’m a little bit crazy. “You need to stop thinking you know me. You knew me once, but I promise, you don’t know me anymore. Got it?”

~EXCERPT #2~
(Mature Content, 18+)
The way he uses me is violent. Primitive. Demeaning. And all I can think is, don’t stop.
He warned me he was going to be rough. He warned me I’d feel alarmed when he shoved his cock all the way down my throat. I was ready for that.
I wasn’t ready for the names he would call me.
Or to be so wildly turned on by it all.
It’s as if we crossed over to the right side of wrong, and everything is too hot, and his cock is too huge, and I have too many clothes. I want him to lay me out and use me. I want him to do anything to me. Everything to me.
I pull back, knowing he’ll shove my head back onto his cock, and he does, fingers digging into my scalp.
My nipples rub on his legs, heating—from the friction, maybe—and I nearly get off. It’s pure madness. Usually I need a lot of help.
But this is Aleksio being Aleksio. He always went too far, and I always loved him for it.
I feel when he’s going to come.
“No teeth. Don’t you fucking…” He jerks into my throat. The orgasm goes on forever. He holds my head firmly in his grip, panting.
I move my tongue a tiny bit and he clutches my hair. “God! Don’t move.”
I feel dazed. Heart pounding. This was the wildest and most powerful sexual experience of my life and I didn’t even come.
“Okay,” he whispers after a while, gently extracting himself from me. I sit on the coffee table, wiping my mouth and striking the tears from my cheeks.
His eyes shine, and I know he felt power of what just happened. The mad connection. Deep down, I know that neither of us have been here before. He reaches out and brushes my hair from my forehead.
That’s when I see the gun in his other hand, dark and cold and black.
He was holding a gun? Why? Why would he need a gun?
“Don’t worry, the safety was on.” He puts it aside, eyes averted, and then he swipes his phone off the floor. He presses something. A red light goes off.
My mouth falls open. “What the hell? What did you do?”
“Saved your finger.”
Red. A record light.
He tucks himself in, zips himself up.
He recorded us? Why record us like that? With him holding a gun? Why would he want to make it look like he was being a violent asshole, forcing me to do that?
Suddenly everything in the room gets too bright, too real. “No!” I go for the phone.
He grabs my wrist, hauling me up off the couch with him. “Leave it.”
“You’re going to show that recording to him? No!” I try to twist free. “You can’t!”
He can and he will.
I’m flooded with shame for how much I enjoyed it. And Aleksio made a movie out of it! To frighten Dad!
“Fuck!” I jerk and twist, trying to get at the phone. “You can’t! Please.”
“Sorry.”
“Oh my God!”
That’s when Viktor comes in. He regards us calmly, like it’s no big deal Aleksio is manhandling me. Aleksio tosses the phone to his brother. “Play it.”
“No! Don’t!”
Viktor taps the screen.
“Don’t watch it!” I go for Viktor now, but Aleksio has me.
“You can’t send Dad that clip.”
“We’re not sending him your bloody finger, isn’t that what you wanted?”
Aleksio. So cool, so smooth. Like it meant nothing to him. And me like an idiot, getting off on his rough treatment. Making myself vulnerable to him. Showing him something I never even showed myself. I want to die.
Viktor pockets the phone. “Her severed finger would be more extreme. More urgency. But this is more pain for the old man.”
“You guys are animals!”
Aleksio tightens hold on me. “You need to be done going crazy or we’ll handcuff and gag you.”
“You have to erase it!”
“You prefer the finger? That’s what you’re saying here?”
I trusted Aleksio. I followed him somewhere extreme, and he ripped my heart open. Cutting off my finger seems tame in comparison.
“You’re thinking about it? Fuck! No. Fuck that.” He turns to Viktor. “Call and see if the sack of shit’s awake.”
