BOOK REVIEW: At Her Service by Shayna Snow

The Callahan Brothers8 hot and sexy guys... Meet the first one in this new steamy series by Shayna Snow!

~Synopsis~
Sometimes it takes a force of nature…

Kyle Callahan thinks he has life all figured out. After a winning season on the university football team, he’s studied, partied, and slept with willing women. And not necessarily in that order. After graduation, he’ll cap off four years as an Army ROTC cadet by becoming a Second Lieutenant.

Sarah Morgan thought she was getting an engagement ring. Instead, she got dumped for another girl. After throwing herself a pity party, she decides to make the most of the remainder of the school year. With two job offers in hand, she can afford to have some fun.

When a crazy spring storm brings them together, their last weeks of school develop into a series of steamy encounters. But when Kyle steps into the role of hero, Sarah discovers her knight-in-camouflage has captured her heart.

But their mapped-put life plans didn’t include each other. With graduation around the corner, are they ready to be tied down?

*This is an erotic romance novella with M/F and M/F/M scenes. 18+ please. *

Book Review: At Her Service (The Callahan Brothers #1)
by Shayna Snow

4.5 Stars...or an 'A' grade since this is college ;-)

Drenched in rain from an abrupt thunderstorm, Sarah Morgan catches the eye of football player/future army soldier Kyle Callahan one afternoon on campus. Both are seniors and share the same major, but they’ve never met before. Though Sarah plays a little coy at first, Kyle has his sights set on her now.

Sarah is a nice balance of confidence and moments that make her blush. She’s pretty down-to-earth. Kyle is cute and sweet… And then he’s pretty hot and dirty talking!
“‘Gonna start spanking you for every time you say that….Lie back. Shorts off.’”
Yes, there is spanking and encounters that make use of their surroundings. ;-)

This is a novella so the pace moves fast, and there isn’t much of a build up to their relationship although that isn’t necessarily unrealistic in a college setting. But both characters are likable, developed sufficiently for the length of the story, and have good chemistry.  Even the side characters are likable; plus there’s a subplot with a creep loose on campus.

Told via Kyle and Sarah’s alternating first person point of view, the pair get down and dirty; and when Kyle discovers Sarah’s secret fantasy, he offers to make it come true.
“I relent and give her the book. She clutches it to her chest and stares at me.”
While Sarah stands ‘book-bosomed’ with her favorite romance novel, she realizes she’s been given the opportunity to make the scene come to life. I’ll admit that I liked Kyle and Sarah as a couple and was weary of them going a ‘non-exclusive’ route, not that they ever defined their relationship as such.  But the m/f/m is handled well, and by well I mean hot but in a way that still kinda keeps certain encounters to just Kyle and Sarah.

Is Sarah’s sexy rebound guy a white knight in shining armor?  Do they have a future beyond graduation?

If you are in the mood for an upbeat, hot, and dirty new adult erotic afternoon (or late night) read that you can devour in one sitting, then this is definitely one to pick up!

Author Interview: "Five Questions with Shayna Snow"

Q1. First let’s talk writing in general. How did you decide to start writing, and what is your favorite part of the writing process? What do you think is the most challenging?

A. I’ve been reading romance for a while – it’s pretty much all I read. The idea for this series formed in my head one day and I mulled it over for a bit, then decided I had to write it down and see it through to completion. I love writing the rough draft – I just write as fast as I can, get the words out, and turn off my internal editor. And for the last part of your question…my least favorite part – that would be choosing a cover. Yes, it’s actually really difficult! I rely on stock photos, as a lot of new authors do, because I simply don’t have the budget to hire models and a photographer. So I look through lots of stock photos to find something that hopefully comes close to being a good fit for my story.

Q2. I felt you blended the new adult and erotica genres together well in this novella as college can easily be a place for casual hook-ups and experimentation; what led you to the genre and the topic?

A. The New Adult genre is full of potential for so many different emotions. It’s a time where you’re finding your footing in the adult world, but you need to figure things out as you go, so mistakes will be made. And there’s a joy in finding people (friends or significant others) who will live through the mistakes and muddling with you, sharing in your successes and being a comfort when things don’t go the way you planned. As for the erotica side, well, I can’t resist. ☺ I’ve heard some writers say that writing sex scenes is difficult, but they never are for me. So I decided to combine the two, and college was a natural location for the story.

Q3. Do you have a favorite scene, and why?

A. My favorite scene in this story (and in almost all that I read) is where the two main characters first see each other. It’s that “magic moment” where they can’t look away and they instantly feel something for the other. And any plans or pre-conceived notions they may have had just go *poof* and suddenly they are on uncertain ground.

Q4. What was your inspiration for the characters, Sarah and Kyle?

A. I wanted characters in their early twenties, because I love that new adult age. I wanted to make them relatable, and most of us can relate to getting dumped (unfortunately) as Sarah did. And then we can also relate to the feeling of wanting a fresh start, and to take chances because of it. Also, there was a family in my town growing up, where the parents really did have eight boys. They were trying for a girl but it never happened, and that was too interesting NOT to put into a story!

Q5. Kyle is one of eight brothers in his family (wow)!  Since this is book #1 in the Callahan Brothers series, what can readers expect with future book and Kyle’s siblings?  Will they be able to be read as stand-alones? Will we see more of Kyle and Sarah?

A. I plan for all of the Callahan books to be erotica stand-alones, and the first three will be novellas. I may turn one into a full length novel, because I’m thinking of giving one brother a MUCH darker side. And I may come back to Kyle and Sarah in a new story, because I see a lot of potential with them. I do plan to stick to the New Adult genre as much as I can, though some of the brothers will be in their late twenties. The next book will be about Kyle’s younger brother, Dean, and is called Cherry Bomb. I’ll release it right before Christmas. ☺

Thanks Shayna and can't wait to read Cherry Bomb!

BOOK REVIEW: Leo Maddox by Sarah Darlington
 4.5 Stars

Leo Maddox is the companion book to He BelongsWith Me, which is the story of Leo and twin sisters Clara and Maggie Ryder. He Belongs With Me is told from Clara and Maggie’s point of view. This one is told from Leo’s.

21 year old Leo Maddox is the privileged son of a hotel mogul and eventual heir to a fortune. But Leo has lived a lonely life. His mother abandoned him and his father pays him little attention outside of the business world.  Leo can be cocky. Leo can be snarky. And Leo has a few vices, although most of them are more in the past than other people realize. But Leo’s biggest problem for most of his life is that the girl he’s in love with barely notices him, and when she does it’s generally to argue with.

Call it a sixth sense that sends Leo back to Blue Creek, Virginia (where the twins reside over summer vacation) on a fateful night that results in a little golf cart fiasco, an incident that finally puts Leo on Clara’s radar.  Leo and Clara have had a love/hate relationship all their life growing up together. Maggie is Leo’s best friend and while their family and peers might assume that they will end up together, it’s Clara’s affection that Leo craves.  But even once Clara begins to realize her true feelings for Leo, Leo must turn around their rocky relationship.
“Prove to me you aren't an ass and I’m all yours.” –Clara
Can Leo step up to the plate and woo Clara or will he put his foot in his mouth again and lose his possibly one and only chance with her?

The story follows the same plot as He Belongs With Me along with some extra scenes specific to Leo. Stories told entirely from the male point of view aren’t plentiful so if you enjoy the male perspective, this is one to pick up!  If you’ve already read He Belongs With Me you can think of this as “rewatching” it with Leo’s commentary turned on ;-)  You get extra insight into what Leo was thinking and feeling as well as some behind the scenes information, unbeknownst to the girls.

I enjoyed getting Leo’s voice this time around as well as hearing some key scenes from his point of view.  I laughed at how Leo realized Clara’s “skills” lacked experience. It definitely captured the guy perceptive. I did miss the “mystery” aspect that He Belongs With Me offered as Dean’s exact identity and life unfolded as well as the little chapter cliffy’s that came with the shifting point of view of the girls. But it was still fun to get inside Leo’s head.

Whether you read Leo’s version of the story or the twins or both, the characters are cute and likeable, and the plot is a lot of fun. Want to learn more about Leo, Clara, and Maggie? Keep reading for an exclusive interview with the characters…

CHARACTER INTERVIEW:
"Five Questions with Leo Maddox, Clara, and Maggie"

Hi gang! Thanks for taking some time away from Blue Creek to come visit with Book-Bosomed Book Blog. (Sorry it’s not Arizona, Clara.) Still, I hope you guys have fun while readers get to know a little more about you.

Since Leo’s version of events is hitting shelves, let’s get started with him…

Q1. Leo—Clara and Maggie might be identical twins but we know they are very different. In 3 words each, describe both Clara and Maggie.

A. Leo: For Clara... Sexy, beautiful, fun, loving, and stubborn. Sorry, three words just isn't enough for Clara.
And for Maggie... Smart, loyal, and kind.

Q2. Leo—Dean likes Maggie in her red dress. Since you have such a keen sense of fashion yourself, what do you like Clara in best?

A. Leo:  Nothing at all. ;) But on a serious note... Clara has a sense of style all her own. And the rest of the world might find it random, but I love it. She can wear a paper bag and still look gorgeous as hell.

Q3. This question is for the twins, let’s put Leo on the hot seat a moment and discuss him.  Clara—what is Leo’s greatest strength? Maggie—what is Leo’s greatest weakness?

A. Clara: Is assholeness a word? Leo can be a bit of smartass sometimes, but it's one of the things I love about him most. He's ruthless when he wants to be and I love it.

Maggie: His vices. Alcohol and such. Clara keeps him line these days though, so he's getting much better.

Q4. Clara—You and Leo have had a tumultuous relationship over the years and you’ve done some crazy things to him. What’s the meanest thing Leo has ever said to you? And how’s he doing now in terms of proving himself? Anything specific that you’d like to share that he’s done to wow you lately?

Clara: The meanest? Um, probably at my high school graduation party. I never really wanted a party, but my dad invited everyone anyway and held this giant dance. It was ridiculous, bigger than a wedding reception, and not my style. So, I decided to announce, in front of everyone, how much I hated golf and was never playing again. So everyone could finally stop calling me the "Reed Ryder of the future." Leo called my bluff. He stood up, telling the entire room that I was "a child throwing a temper tantrum" and not to believe a single word. I was embarrassed. Looking back, turns out he was right. I've never stopped loving or playing golf.

Leo and I still fight–that's never going to change. The only different now is that we make up. And I sure love making up. ;) We're honest with each other and now I know when he butts heads with me, he's really only doing it for my own good.

As for wowing me...Leo recently surprised me with a trip to Arizona. We rode donkeys down the Grand Canyon. Leo hated it. But it was so fun watching him pretend to like it just for me. Don't worry, after that adventure, we spent the majority of the trip in the hotel room--doing stuff we both enjoyed. ;)

Q5. Last question to everyone (Leo, Clara, and Maggie)—where do you see yourselves in five years?

Maggie: Well, now that I'm dating Dean my life has changed quite a bit. He has a daughter. She never knew her mom, while my mom died young, and I try everyday to be a positive role model she can look up to. I hope in five years I am still doing the exact same thing. I love Dean and his daughter and I want to make this a permanent thing.

Clara:  Five years? Hmmm... Well, I've started golfing more. Dad has been working with me lately and it has been going very well. I might be better than him in five years. Let's face it, he getting kind of rusty. Don't tell him I said that. In five years I'm thinking I might try to do it professionally. As for Leo...I can't even picture my life without him anymore. In five years I hope that will remain true.

Leo:  I'll be with Clara. The rest really doesn't matter beyond that. She's my future.

Thanks Leo, Clara, Maggie...and Sarah! Had a blast reading your stories!

Eye of the Storms-Lisa-Gillis-Nov
3 Stars

(Reader note: This review is not spoiler free as there’s simply no way to honestly review the title without discussing some details which may be construed as reveals.)

Eye of the Storms is the story of Marissa and Jack. Marissa is a hotel casino worker. Jack plays in a band. They have a random hook-up at a concert which leaves them with a lifelong connection.

This is an updated version (actually the original), as it was previously published in third person and with less sexy details. I have not read the third person version but I have a huge preference for first person so I’m glad the author reverted to the original narration.

The story itself is engaging and raised interesting concerns and discussions that one would have to face when placed in the positions that Marissa and Jack find themselves. My biggest drawback with the book ran more with the actions of the characters, particularly Marissa. While I sympathized with her custody concerns, I had a hard time getting past the fact that she never told Jack about Tristin until she absolutely had to. That was a huge strike one against Marissa for me. Strike two came with all the games she played with Jack after he came back into her life. If she would have been younger and a child wasn’t part of the equation, I might have felt differently but I just wasn’t endeared to her playing games to get Jack back (on top of the fact that she snubbed him from their lives in the first place) when she should have been discussing the big issues with him.

While Jack is part of a band, this isn’t really a traditional rocker story and often I forgot that Jack Stone was even a rock star as he doesn’t carry that persona about him for the most part. There’s also a lot of insta love/lust and the two jump in bed right off the bat so there’s no build-up; their actual relationship develops several years after the fact and is a work in progress as this is book #1. The first chapter of book #2 is included.

~Review~
All I Want (Alabama Summer #2) by J. Daniels
4.5 Stars

We first met Tessa Kelly in Where I Belong (Alabama Summer #1) which was her brother Ben and her best friend Mia’s story.  And if you’ve read Where I Belong then you probably already have a bit of a feel for Tessa’s character and her heated relationship with Ben’s partner Luke Evans, although you haven't seen anything yet. ;-)  If you haven’t read the first book, All I Want could be read as a stand alone although reading it before Where I Belong will spoil certain reveals regarding Ben and Mia as this story is taking place the following summer.

Tessa is a bit of a smart talking spitfire. She’s bold; she can be crass; and she doesn’t take anyone’s crap. Sometimes it gives her the upper hand and other times in gets her in a heap of trouble.

Luke is no easy going guy either. He has heavy family issues that he’s been wrestling with for years; and he’s frustrated with Tessa, unable to completely move on from their failed relationship a year ago, and yet not willing to put the emotional investment into it, even though he technically already has.

They seem to think their relationship is toxic but in reality they are pretty right for each other. While they are both willing to let the other slip away rather than deal with the issue at the heart of their relationship and fight for each other, neither is willing to let the other walk away with someone else. As a result, there’s a lot of back and forth, but there’s also plenty of hot and dirty scenes in between!
"Her eyes, full of unshed tears, draw me in, and slide me even closer to her until she's right up against me. I don't fight the commanding need in me that wants to be with her right now. I don't block it out with memories of our past. I let myself indulge in this. In her."
While sweetness and affection between them might be scarce, there’s no shortage of hot, dirty talking encounters. They certainly have chemistry, even when their love life isn’t sunshine and roses. In fact every time it seems like Luke and Tessa might do something sweet with each other, it never quite materializes… (well till the end) ;-)

J. Daniels does an amazing job with the characters. You feel their chemistry; you feel their pain. And through their actions and words you get a distinct picture of who each of them are and where they are coming from. While I admit both characters frustrated me at times because I really wanted to see them get together and stay together, I enjoyed both of their attitudes at the same time. Luke is plenty alpha; and while there are far too many weak, female characters floating around in fiction, Tessa is not one of them. She encounters scenarios you’ve probably read before in regards to the “other woman” (don’t worry, there’s technically no cheating) but I doubt you’ll find too many that handle it like Tessa. And some of the things she does and says produce some great laugh out loud ‘no, she didn’t really do that or say that’ scenes. Just see the prologue in the excerpt provided below for an example of her ballsiness.

When I Fall, Reed’s story, is next for book three, and I hope we get to see more of Tessa and Luke like we did Mia and Ben in this one. Till then, spend some more time with both couples and learn a few ‘dirty details’ in the blog’s exclusive interview with the characters of the Alabama Summer series.

“5 Questions PLUS with the Alabama Summer Series Characters”

Welcome Tessa, Luke, Mia, Ben, and Nolan to Book-Bosomed Book Blog! Now that we’ve read so much about ya all, it’s great to meet you ;-)

So in our typical “5 Questions” format, let’s just throw one out to each of you so the readers can learn a little more about you and your relationship with each other.  Oh and feel free to cover Nolan’s ears if necessary.

Q1. Tessa—Name something Luke does that drives you crazy in a good way and something that drives you crazy in a bad?

Tessa: “Nolan might want to leave the building for this answer.”
Mia: *covers Nolan’s ears* “I don’t even know if I want to hear this.”
Luke: “I sure as shit do. *leans back* Go ahead, babe.”
Tessa: “Hmm. He loves getting me wet in public when I can’t do anything about it.”
Ben: ‘”What the fuck did you just say?”
Tessa: “What? He does.”
Luke: “That’s not really true. We always do something about it.”
Tessa: *smiles* “Right. Okay, well, still. It’s frustrating until we do something about it.”
Mia: “Which question are you answering? Drives you crazy in a good way?”
Luke: “Both probably.”
Tessa: “Yup. Both.”
Ben: “Next question.”

Q2. Luke—What would you like Tessa to do more of? What would you like her to do less of?

Ben: “I think I should take Nolan outside.”
Luke: “Relax, man. Jesus.”
Tessa: “Oh I can’t wait to hear this.”
Luke: “I wish she took control more. I fucking love it when she does that.”
Tessa: “You do?”
Luke: *nods* “Yeah, babe.”
Tessa: “I can do that. What do you wish I did less of?”
Luke: *smiles* “Nothing.”
Mia: “Nope. You gotta answer, Luke.”
Ben: “Or we could move on to the next question. I vote for that.”
Tessa: “No, I’m curious. There has to be something you’d change about me.”
Luke: “There isn’t.”
Ben: “You’re scared she’ll cut your balls off.”
Luke: “I’m not an idiot.”

Q3. Mia—Ben proved himself to be such a great guy and a real family man but name one thing that Ben totally sucks at and one thing he excels at.

Mia: *looks at Ben* “I don’t think Ben sucks at anything. Wait… no he’s good at that too.”
Tessa: *raises hand* “Can I answer this? I have an endless list of things Ben sucks at.”
Mia: “Shut up. Okay, he’s not so great at massaging.”
Ben: “What? I’m fucking awesome at rubbing you.”
Mia: “Not when I just want a massage! It turns into sex in 5 seconds!”
Ben: “Hey, that’s not my fault.”
Tessa: “Luke can’t touch me without getting hard.”
Ben: *glares at Tessa * “This isn’t your fucking question.”
Luke: “I’m staying out of this one.”
Mia: “Okay, okay. Jesus. And he’s great at being a husband and father.”
Tessa: “Aww.”
Ben: “Love you.”
Mia: “Love you more.”

Q4. Ben—What do you think is Mia’s greatest strength and greatest weakness?

Ben: “If you’re around Mia for a minute, you’ll know the answer to this question. She doesn’t have any flaws. Mia is amazing, everything about her draws you in. She’s the kindest person I know, she cares about everybody, and she would do anything for anyone.”
Tessa: “Could you not make Mia cry?”
Mia: “I’m not crying.” *sniffs*
Ben: “It’s true. I don’t know if she has a weakness, unless it’s for my…”
Mia: “Next question!”

Q5. Nolan—You’re such a cutie that we couldn’t leave you out of this interview. So tell us anything you want to say!

Mia: *uncovers Nolan’s ears* “Baby, you can say anything you want. It’s your turn.”
Nolan: *smiles and holds out a small toy airplane* “This thing is soooo cool! Daddy said I could fwy one some day, but I wanna fight bad guys like Daddy and Uncle Wuke. I’m gonna kill em’ all with my sword!”
Mia: “Nolan, don’t talk like that.”
Nolan: *looks at Mia* “Sorwy, Mommy.”
Ben: “Buddy, just don’t say you’re going to kill the bad guys.”
Nolan: “I’m gonna stab em!”
Mia: “Here, have some goldfish, Nolan.”
Nolan: *grabs bag and starts munching*

PLUS! Now we’re going to do a quick rapid fire question session for just the adults about their 'couple' time preferences, and I think we have some dragons for Nolan to slay in another room so you can speak freely.

#1 Ben and Luke—Satin, lace, or cotton?

Ben: “Is naked an option?”
Mia: “Ben!”
Luke: “Yeah, fuck those choices.”
Ben: “Look, Mia could wear a fucking garbage bag and I’m ready. So any of those.”
Mia: *smiles* “I love you”
Tessa: “Luke, care to chime in?”
Luke: “I don’t know. I guess lace, ‘cause I can see through that shit.”
Tessa: “Let’s be real. Nothing stays on me long anyway with this one.” *gestures to Luke*
Luke: “Fuckin’ right.”
Ben: “The hell? Can we split up into couples? I don’t want to know this shit.”

#2 Mia and Tessa—Boxers or briefs?

Tessa: “NOTHING!”
Mia: “What? Nothing? That’s not one of the options, Tessa.”
Tessa: “It’s always an option, but Luke always wears boxers, so boxers… or NOTHING.”
Luke: “Babe, just say the words.”
Tessa: *raises eyebrow* “Right now?”
Ben: “Mia, answer so we can get off this fucking topic.”
Luke: *laughs*
Mia: “Boxers. Briefs are for old men.”
[Interviewer nods and agrees with Mia—save the briefs for old men or little boys just out of diapers. *Glances back at Luke and Ben, picturing them in just their boxers* "Is there a policemen of Ruxton calendar the boys are featured in?...June? July?...Something to definitely consider, but moving along..."]

#3 Ben and Luke—Shaven or unshaven?

Luke: “Is this a pussy question?”
Tessa: “This interview is awesome.”
Ben: *glares at Luke* “Don’t answer this question.”
Luke: “What? All right… shaven.”
Ben: “What the fuck? She’s my sister. I don’t want to know that shit.”
Mia: “Relax, babe.”
Luke: “Look, I didn't want to do this interview, but Tessa told me if I didn't answer these questions, she’d cut me off. You hear me? So I’m fucking answering.”
Tessa: “I did. I’ll lock this shit up if he tries to get out of this.”
Luke: “See?”
Mia: “I don’t see what the big deal is.”
Ben: *shakes head* “Fine. Shaven is my answer too.”
Mia: “Yeah it is.”
Ben: “Angel, if you keep looking at me like that, I’m ending this interview.”

#4 Mia and Tessa—Take the guys to the 50 Shades movie première or stay home and read the steamy parts out loud to them?

Mia: “I don’t know if I could drag Ben to see that. And he gets off on my dirty mouth, so I’d chose reading it at home… naked.”
Ben: “I like that answer.”
Tessa: “You’re so nasty, Mia.”
Mia: “What? Me? Are you kidding?”
Tessa: *laughs* “I could get Luke to go. Easy. Movie theater BJ.”
Mia: “Oh. My. God.”
Tessa: “What? Like you haven’t.”
Mia: “I haven’t!”
Luke: “You’re sucking me off during that whole movie if I’m going to that shit.”
Ben: *leans forward, cracks knuckles* “Hey, interviewer, next question.”
[Interviewer: "We’ll move on; don’t break out the handcuffs, Officer Kelly. But I do hope you all stop back after the movie release to tell me how this went. *giggles* Oh and bring Reed with you then so we can interrogate…ah, I mean, interview him too." *wink*]

#5 Both couples—strawberries, chocolate, or whip cream?

Mia: “Chocolate.”
Tessa: “Yup. Chocolate. I like how you have to really work at licking it off.”
Ben: “Mia are you ready to go?”
Luke: “You didn’t answer, man.”
Ben: “Neither did you!”
Luke: *laughs* “Tessa can choose. I’ll eat anything off her.”
Ben: *stands* “Come on, angel. We’re leaving.”
[Interviewer: "So Ben, we'll have a sample of all three sent to your house so you can get back to us on that answer, yes? Inquiring minds want to know."]

Thanks everyone! It’s been a ton of fun! Loved having you! And a big thanks to J. Daniels and Give Me Books for coordinating the interview!

BOOK REVIEWS: In Deep series by Kella McKinnon

Box Set
In Deep (#1) by Kella McKinnon

3.5 stars
“He’s bad news. Looks all polished and business-like, but he isn’t, not underneath. He’s heartache and misery all covered up in wads of cash and fancy suits. F*cks like a beast though.”
That’s the warning about Cristos Vicario that Brielle Dalton receives. But she doesn’t heed the warning.
“Once is chance. Twice if fate.”
And fate is one theme of the book. Brielle’s path crosses with Cristos more than once and he can’t resist the pull to her. Cristos Vicario is a billionaire playboy with a dark side. Hooking up with him is a gamble, bigger than any bet placed on the tables of his casino in Vegas. She’s nothing like he normally goes for. Brielle is an anthropology student working on her Ph.D., temporarily in Vegas as she finishes up her dissertation.

Cristos is the type of man used to getting what he wants and in a lot of stories his type would get the girl with his ways. But Brielle is admirable in her resistance to him, even when she feels the pull between them as much as the reader.  And yet Brielle has a ton of patience with a man that won’t break his hard fast rule of kissing. The rule being he doesn’t kiss!

Cristos is demanding, domineering, and temperamental. He’s crafted in a way that makes him more likeable to the reader, and perhaps even vulnerable by the back story of his life, provided at times during his point of view.   The alternating first person point of view works well at showing both of their sides. Cristos ways are frustrating to Brielle, but make more sense to the reader given his past and upbringing.

What is Cristos’s big plan for his life? How will Brielle change/interfere with it? Will he ever open up enough to hold onto Brielle or will he lose her, a casualty of his trust issues?

Book one ends on a cliffhanger as this really is a two-part story so plan on reading both when you pick it up.

In Deeper (#2) by Kella McKinnon

3 Stars

In Deeper is the conclusion to Cristos and Brielle’s on and of again relationship. Cristos’s impulsive nature is even more apparent in this book as his actions are often fueled by his own fears and desires. There is a lot of back and forth and repetition with break-ups, switching hotels, and intentions with birth control.  Cristos must decide what he ultimately wants and commit to it.

While Cristos’s past, revealed in book 1, allowed me to have more sympathy for him, in this book I found him a little harder to like, and it wasn’t even necessary what it’s revealed he’s done at the end. He’s very controlling, and Brielle’s lack of resolve in this one made her not as admirable as she was in the first book too.

Will Cristos finally grant Brielle that all important kiss? Will he reveal all his secrets to her? And if he does, will she still want him?

Much of the new action doesn’t come till the climax.  And some of what goes down is like a scene out of a TV show. I’m a reader partial to more realism in certain “life” moments (really trying to avoid spoilers here) so it felt a little over the top for me, but others might enjoy the drama. I was glad to see Criss complete his goals and technically come out on the other side. He got what he needed in his life, and Brielle got what she wanted, whether she knew it or not.

BLOG TOUR: Lowdown and Lush by Selena Laurence

Mike Owens is the devil. Sexy, snarky, and as lowdown as they come, he's one of the world's greatest guitarists and one of Portland's most notorious bad boys.

Jenny Turner is an angel. A preacher's daughter, she's a good girl with a great voice and a dream to hit it big in country music.

When these two opposites meet, the attraction is undeniable, but something's stopping the bad boy from pursuing what he desires most. Can this angel handle the truth behind her devil? Or will his secrets be too Lowdown and Lush?

4 Stars

As the book opens, we find Lush guitarist Mike Owens in a funk, much like Joss was in book one, A Lush Betrayal. He’s full of self-loathing and going through the rocker lifestyle motions but not really happy. Joss, in contrast, is much lighter these days. Having found happiness with Mel, he becomes a bit of a leader again, though not of the band, which is still broken up.

Mike is tormenting himself, denying himself of the one woman who has touched his heart and looks past his rough exterior.  Jenny Turner is an up and coming country singer, managed by Tammy. She’s also a minister’s daughter, raised in Texas, far from the rock scene that Mike has known. She really couldn’t be more opposite than Mike. But after everything in his life he’s been through (you learn the specifics of this throughout the story) Jenny’s innocence seems to be what Mike finds attractive.
“I sigh. Poor Michael. No one’s in his corner. And I’m about to become the pawn in their campaign to bring him to heel. I know he’s been a jerk. I know he almost ruined Mel and Joss—and Tammy and Walsh too—but it all ended up fine. Well, almost fine. I guess the band is still broken up, so there is that.” —Jenny
Yes at times, Mike acts like the jerk we’ve seen him be, but he’s definitely not given a pass. Joss, Mel, and Tammy through the course of the book make him man-up, straighten up, and get his shit together.  I was happy to see his actions never brushed over. Mike has to work to get himself on track, and his friends give it to him straight and don’t cut him any slack.
“I hang my head, suddenly understanding what it feels like to be a dog in trouble with its owner.” —Mike
Mike’s character definitely grows and through revelations from Mike’s past some of his previous actions make more sense. Although Mike learns from his previous missteps and mistakes, what he did to the band is rightfully not excused, simply explained.

I can’t say I ever really related with Jenny’s character. (But then I'm neither a country music kind of girl nor from a religious background so it could just be that.) I was mostly neither here nor there about her.  I didn't exactly feel the chemistry between her and Mike like I did Joss and Mel, who remain my Lush couple favorite. I definitely enjoyed their inclusion in the story.

There’s also bit of a triangle, though nothing of the Walsh/Tammy/Joss intensity.  At the same time the tale is just as much drama as love story.  This is a story about mending old wounds from the past to move on a better future. It’s a good story that advances the Lush saga.
