For the Love of Ash is the story of two twenty-three year old’s struggles to
handle responsibilities greater than their age. Both Maggie Larken and Luke
Wilson have taken on the parenting roles for their siblings. Maggie to her nine
year old brother after their parent’s death, and Luke due to an abusive father
and neglectful mother. It creates an interesting back story, although at times
it’s more of the main story than their developing romance.
Luke, despite a few missteps, was pretty cute. I liked when
he was being flirty—that’s when the chemistry came through. Maggie, though,
frustrated me at times. Just when things would start to sizzle, they’d buckle
under the pressures. I really wanted to see more of them making it work, but
the story is more about them making their way.
While the writing is good, there were a few side characters
and side plots that felt never fully developed. Issues were raised or teased at
but they never came to fruition. And while it was nice to see the main characters
who had endured some heavy life events at a young age get counseling, there
were still incidents occurring that were never reported.
For the Love of Ash is a stand-alone told via Maggie
and Luke’s alternating first person point of view. Epilogue included.
