BOOK REVIEW: Soldier by Maggie Sweet

~Blurb~
MICK
I knew I shouldn't have come back here. Too many memories and not enough action.

How am I supposed to make a future when no one will let me forget the past?

But as soon as I see her, I know I have to hang around, just for a few more days. Even if she says no. She needs protection, and things are worse than she realizes.

RAINY
I have to get out of here. This town is going to drown me alive. I know that people need me, but keeping them afloat is dragging me to the bottom of the well.

The only way I'll feel safe is if I can start again, somewhere else. Nobody ever seems to make it out of here. Look at Mick - he was kicked out and he's still back in town.

Mick, that guy is nothing but trouble. Trouble and muscles.

**standalone novel intended for mature audiences. No cliffhanger!**

~Book Review~
4 Stars

Michael “Mick” O’hare  just got discharged from the army.  He’s back in his hometown and looking…well, to get laid. Renata “Rainy” Lupita Diaz waitresses at the local bar, but she really just wants to be a college student and get out of this town.

I have to admit, my first impression of Mick wasn’t the best. The opening scene paints him as a total horny douchebag.  I really questioned if I could get on board with him as the ‘hero.’ But then the humor in the story starts to kick in and he actually started to grow on me.
“Well, what can you expect. All the ladies love me.”  —Mick
Rainy, meanwhile, well she also threw me for a bit of a loop too when she was actually the one to suggest the hook up and then proceeded to drop her shorts at the bar.  The plan is to never see each other again. Of course it doesn’t go that way.
“Sometimes you discover your latest one-night stand naked in your kitchen. It happens.” —Rainy
Turns out Mick’s dad takes in foster kids and low and behold Rainy happened to be one of them in the years that Mick has been away.  Now not only is he temporarily living with her, he’s also forced to work with her.  Oh and there’s a whole lot of nefarious dealings going on with the businesses in town.
“It is like a never ending train wreck in slow motion. All I have to do is get the fuck off, step away from the train wreck.”  —Rainy
Imagine my surprise when before this very quote, I shook my head and thought, “these characters and this plot are a bit of a train wreck!”—you know when you really shouldn’t watch but you can’t take your eyes off it. Well that’s how it was as I kept tapping pages, glued to my kindle screen, occasionally my mouth gaping open. And since the characters thought that, and I thought that, well I guess we were all on the same page so…party on!
“Mick jogs down the driveway, still shirtless but now wearing a pair of Army-issue sweatpants. I can see his donkey cock flopping back and forth under the fabric as he jogs.” —Rainy
Yes, back to Mick and the train wreck. He supposedly smells (Rainy’s words, not mine. At first I thought in a bad way, but later I began to amend that interpretation) and he’s well endowed (there was no confusion about that). Donkey cock, horse cock, ferret, baby’s arm…all these very visual descriptions of Mick’s third leg and you can see why it was a little hard to put down. (Take the pun if you want—go ahead, it’s probably fitting.)

Anyways, there’s a bit of suspense about what’s all really going down with Mick’s old cronies and the workings of the bar.  There are quite a few supporting characters, and I’ll admit I was a little confused on the dynamics at times. There are also some grammatical and continuity issues that another proofing would clean up just fine. (Updated Note: This review was based off an unproofed ARC copy courtesy of the author.)

But the banter between Mick and Rainy was the most entertaining and I found myself rooting for them.  Rainy is a strong female character and she held her own well with Mick, at times even getting the upper hand. Deep down Mick does have some integrity and the pair are hot together.  With that being said, I actually wish the story was longer. Told via Mick and Rainy’s alternating first person POV, the ending comes up rather abruptly and I felt like there was so much going on that there was definitely more story to be told. Plus, I really wanted to read more about Mick and Rainy!
So if you’re in the mood for a shorter, fun and sexy read, Soldier is one to check out.

Genre: Mafia Romance
Release Date: January 27, 2016

~Synopsis~

“You will be my woman for a year, servant to my whims and desires. I will not hurt you, unless you want me to.”

I'm in deep to the Mafia. My father was the one who made the deal, and when I inherited his club, I also inherited his troubles.

Ivan wants to save me, or so he says. More like he wants me to be his slave for a year. After the one-night stand I had with him, though, would that be so bad? With his impossibly hard body, and the way he always makes me scream...

But he's still a monster. He's a criminal, and something so much worse.

And yet I can't stop the tingling in my body every time I think of how he touched me, and those dark but delicious words rolling off his tongue, tinged with his Russian accent.

He knows what I'll say, even before I do. "I'll take your offer."

3.5/4 Stars

Katy Foss is trying to keep her father’s club, The Amber Room, a float. It’s all she has left of him. But her father left some debts and the Russian mafia is still collecting.

Ivan Dragomirov  is a hitman for the mafia. His job is to end people’s lives, but he just might be Katy’s savior. An offer to be indentured to him, her anonymous one night stand, for one year might be the best option Katy has.

Ivan is a fairly interesting character; he’s dangerous, dark and reserved, yet seemed to have a soft spot for Katy.
“I keep wondering when the cutesy-date portion of our day will end and my Prince Charming transforms back into my domineering sex master.”
Ivan certainly had potential; I just really wish the characters and the story would have been fleshed out more. I had some trouble connecting with them.  I definitely craved more of a build up, and I felt like scenes were missing that would have contributed to that. The timeframe often skips ahead (from New Years Eve to Valentine’s Day to St. Patrick’s Day, etc.) and I was left wondering about their interactions in between.  Since they’ve not met before the night of their one night stand, I needed more of them getting to know each other to become invested in the romance angle.

All in all, if you are looking for a quicker, sexy read with overtones of danger, then this one fits the bill. Told via Ivan and Katy's alternating first person POV, Owned by the Hitman is a standalone.

REVIEW/RELEASE: Play Me by Katie McCoy

Genre: Contemporary Romance

~Blurb~

Recipe For:
A Roll In The Hay Hot Crossed Buns Love

Ingredients:

1 Chef (equal parts sexy and carefree)

1 Pianist (equal parts uptight and endearing)

1/8 inch of drywall between their apartments

2 opinions on everything

Combine all ingredients, mix vigorously, and be prepared for an explosion of heat.

Pianist Ella Thomas is training for the competition of her life. Finally in an apartment of her own, she can practice from dawn till dusk.

But she didn't bet on the sexy and frustrating neighbor keeping her up all night - even if he does cook like a maestro and kiss like it’s his job.

Jake Matson is living his dream as Head Chef at one of the most popular restaurants in San Francisco. He's easy going, flirtatious and not looking for love. He didn't expect to be completely distracted by the girl next door, whose buttoned-up appearance hides the seductive firecracker underneath.

What happens when opposites attract? As their tension fires up, can they create a new kind of music together or will everything boil over?

~Book Review~
4.5 Stars

As a classical pianist trying to compete in a competition and catch a break, Ella Thomas, 25, is focused on her music…or at least she’s supposed to be; it’s what her music teacher slash ex tells her. And not only does he remind her, he’s kind of tried to brainwash it into her, bringing her confidence down a few notes.
“Stupid fucking Mark.”
Anyways, since music is key, Ella isn’t too worried about having bare kitchen cupboards in her new apartment.  Having hot tattooed 27  year old neighbor, chef Jake Matson, bare….well that might be a problem. A problem of distraction.
“And in that moment, I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do more: feed her or fuck her.”
While initially irritated with her, Jake who sports ratty tees that show off his abs is attracted and intrigued.
“Who was this woman who wore black shapeless dresses, blushed at each sexual insinuation, and wore red lace and garters? She was a mess of contradictions I was more than eager to explore.”
And lucky for Ella, Jake is a total good guy.  A real sweetie, he’s adorable. (If only you could go to a restaurant and order up him!) And helpful…
“‘There are many ways my mouth can be useful….Hop under the covers and I’ll show you.’”
It seems Ella is in a bit of a slump, having difficulty taping into her inner passion, both at the piano and in the bedroom. But Jake might just be her new muse for reaching a crescendo, and the piano bench a place for making more than one kind of music. If only both of their fledgling but demanding careers don’t get in the way.

Told via Jake and Ella’s alternating first person POV, this is a sweet and sexy, delightfully low angst, romance. Play Me is like chicken soup for the romantic soul! It’s lighthearted and fun and will definitely keep you smiling….and salivating, both over that V on the cover as well as the images of Jake’s gooey chocolate brownies.
“…I’d never think about brownies the same way again.”
And you probably won’t either after reading this. ;-)

While Play Me is a standalone, the supporting character of Nina (loved her advice and encouragement) and Dakota definitely have potential as heroines of their own stories.

Katie McCoy is a self proclaimed sushi addict, Cardinals baseball fanatic, and lover of all things theatrical. A St. Louis native transplanted to Brooklyn, she acts, sings, and shakes her booty when she isn't writing books about hot men and the girls who love them.

~Synopsis~
Adam

Payback’s a bitch — or it would be for Elle.

Fifteen years ago, my sister was kidnapped. For months, she’d endured hell. Somehow, she’d survived it. Someway, she’d escaped her captors. But it hadn’t mattered. In fact, it had been like losing her twice, because six weeks after she came home, she was dead, and the man responsible was alive and well, oblivious to her fate, ignorant to what he had coming.

Fifteen years I’d been waiting for this moment, all that time, planning, preparing, readying to put things into motion. To finally make the SOB pay for what he’d done.

Killing him was too easy. Too quick. No. There was a much better way to exact revenge.

Take what he loved best.

Break it.

Break her.

I just didn’t realize that in the process of destroying the girl, I’d destroy myself.

Elle

“I only want your pain.”

I hadn’t understood what those words meant, not really. Not until he made me understand.

I noticed Adam the very first day he moved into my building. He was a badass on a bike in a thousand-dollar suit. When he looked at me, it was with a hunger just this side of obscene.

Our meetings were strange, accidental. Too coincidental. There was something about Adam. Something I couldn’t put my finger on.

Something I couldn’t resist.

He told me I didn’t know him. He warned me to run as far from him as I could. He was moody. Dark. I’d found it romantic. I didn’t know and wouldn’t realize until it was too late that he’d meant for me to heed his warnings. That some part of him had hoped I would run, that I would escape him.

For too many years, vengeance had fueled him. It had taught him hate. The object of that hate? My father. And me? I was the means to my father’s end. Adam would destroy my father by destroying me.

I accused him of being a monster, of being no different than those who took his sister, but even in the harshest moments, all I could see in his eyes was pain. And like a fool, all I wanted was to touch that darkness.

To make it light.

Retribution is a full-length, stand-alone Dark Romantic Suspense novel. NO Cliffhanger. Intended for mature readers.

Adam Smith has his eye on Elle Vega and not with good intentions. It’s no coincidence that they are neighbors. Adam wants revenge for the torture that his sister suffered, and he intends to make Elle pay for her father’s crimes.

The opening pulled me in and it had a great start. I liked Adam’s initial alpha presence and conniving manner.  There was definitely potential. But after Elle is kidnapped, I just didn’t feel their connection or chemistry, at least not enough to understand how Elle continued to get off while undergoing his abuse. I’m not sure if it was because her character was naïve or if she simply was just too accepting of it all. Adam’s appeal also started to wane for me as he flip-flopped back and forth with his plan and became more conflicted.  I know this was supposed to soften him, but he also came across as a little wishy-washy. Plus there were aspects of his characterization that felt lacking or unexplained. All in all I was just kinda of meh on their romance.

There was one reveal that I began to see coming but a few other unpredictable twists that kept the plot fresh. Despite the twisted and disturbing nature of their relationship, the story wraps up neatly in the end and includes an epilogue. Told via Adam and Elle’s alternating first person point of view, Retribution is a dark romantic suspense standalone. Fans of captive erotica will most likely enjoy.

~Excerpt~
For the sixth day this week, I watched Elle Vega walk out of the trendy café, wave good-bye to her friends, and climb into her shiny, new VW Bug. Yellow. Compliments of Daddy, no doubt. I knew for a fact she had a Mini sitting in the garage at home, too, but she wouldn’t bring that around this group. No, she had to maintain the appearance she was like them. Like her friends. She’d then take the long way to her condo in the West Village. Tiny, charming, absurdly overpriced. Perfect for the rich little bitch.
“Mr. Smith, can I get you anything else?” Mary asked, the dark circles under her eyes betraying her fatigue. She’d been serving me the same thing every day for the past six days — a double espresso and a slice of apple pie.
I took my wallet out. “No, thank you, Mary. What’s the damage?” I already knew. It’d be less than ten bucks, but I dug out a fifty-dollar bill anyway.
“Here you go,” she said, handing me the check.
I glanced at it before slipping the fifty into the little pocket folder. “That should cover it.”
“Oh, no, sir, it’s really too much.”
I closed my hand over hers to stop her from giving it back. “How’s Kyle doing, by the way? Things settle down at school?” She was a twenty year old single mom working two jobs, one of which paid below the minimum wage. Fucking ridiculous how, here in the United States of America, one of the wealthiest fucking countries in the world, we have kids like this raising their own kids, struggling to put food on the table.
She smiled, knowing she needed the money. Knowing I knew it. “Kyle’s good, and, yes, it’s going better. The bigger kids stopped teasing him, it seems. His teacher’s pretty nice, actually.”
I smiled back at her. “Good. I’m glad to hear it,” I said, standing. “Oh, one more thing.” I took a business card out of my wallet and handed it to her. “I’ll be going out of town for a while, but if you ever need anything, don’t be a stranger.” She was a good kid. Got a shit lot in life, but a good kid.
Her nose reddened and her eyes moistened. “Thanks, Mr. Smith. You’re a great guy.”
I almost chuckled, wondering if she’d think that if she knew the reason for my daily visits.
I dug the keys out of my suit pocket and went around the corner to where I’d parked my Harley. People turned to stare as I climbed on. It was only natural, I supposed, to watch a big guy in a three-piece suit, wearing shoes costing more than most made in a month, ride a fucking Harley through town. The bike was the only part of the past I brought into my present. The rest I’d return to later, when it was done.
I followed the little yellow bug from some distance away, although I didn’t need to tail her. I knew where she lived. I knew what she ate. Where she did her dry cleaning. Who she socialized with. Who she fucked — although that was surprisingly infrequent. I knew the contents of her underwear drawer. Knew what kind of vibrator she liked and how often she used it. And, today, I’d meet Elle Vega face-to-face. I’d introduce myself as her new neighbor, and I’d steal her life, just like they’d stolen mine.

Natasha Knight is the author of several BDSM and spanking erotic romances all of which explore the mind of the Dominant male and the submissive female, discovering just beneath the surface of each story that key element of love. Her characters are as human as she: powerful but vulnerable, flawed, perhaps damaged but with an incredible capacity to love.

REVIEW/RELEASE: Sketch by Laramie Briscoe

~Blurb~
My name is Devin, but everybody calls me Sketch. I opened my own tattoo shop two years ago, and I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’m going to be able to give my wife everything she’s ever wanted. I’m going to be able to take time off and spend a day a week with her. In fact, tonight, I stopped and grabbed some wine, got her flowers, and those chocolates she likes.

What I wasn’t prepared for was to be met at the front door by her carrying her sh*t out.

She loves me, but she’s not in love with me anymore. What kind of bulls*it excuse is that? I’ve left her alone too often, I’ve been completely focused on one goal, and apparently she’s sick of waiting.

So here I stand. Half the man I was, p*ssed as f*ck, because while I was busy making a better life for us, she was under the impression I was leaving her lonely. I know one day she’ll see what I’ve been doing has been for us, and when that day comes… She can damn well come crawling back to me.

~Book Review~
4.75 Stars

Devin Solomon aka Sketch just watched his wife, Nina, drive out of his life. Proclaiming the marriage over, Nina feels like they are no longer a couple. And in a lot of ways, they aren’t. While initially devastated, Sketch learns that what he thought was his perfect life wasn’t so perfect after all.

This book is really a journey. It’s emotional but not somber, and it’s about struggles but not angst. It’s probably the most real story I’ve read in a long time. It didn’t feel contrived as it avoids using all those standard troupes that are way too prevalent in many romances. There’s no inflated OW/OM drama. This is simply about a marriage in trouble because they’ve lost sight of who they are and what they truly want. The issues that Sketch and Nina have aren’t overblown plot-driven issues and they aren’t silly misunderstandings that could easily be remedied with one conversation. While Nina and Sketch do have to learn better communication, their marital problems are far more complex.

Can this marriage be saved? is the question posed. And there’s two sides to every story.  Marriage is a partnership; it’s about working together. And if you want it to work, you have to put in the effort.

Now don’t go thinking that this is only about a troubled marriage and the downfall of a relationship because it’s really about so much more than that. It’s also about finding yourself and doing what’s right for you which in turn is right for the both of you. It’s about breaking things down and putting the pieces back together.
“This is us being exactly who we’ve always meant to be. This is the new and improved us, and I want us to give this to each other.”
And holy cow is it sexy too. I’ve never read about a nearly divorced couple who know how to find the intimacy again like this.
“Her juices are coating the head of my cock, and I’m leaking everywhere. Together we’re straining trying to come to the end of this ride, even though neither one of us knows where it’s going to lead us.”
It’s touching; it’s steamy; it’s bittersweet; but most of all it’s real.

I would definitely recommend this one to any couple married one year or twenty years or who haven’t been married yet. It’s thoughtful and has a great message. Told mainly from Sketch’s first person point of view with a few small sections from Nina, it’s so much more than just a second chances love story.
“‘If we end up happy because of it, then the journey has been worth it.’” –Sketch

~Book Review~

4.25 Stars

Sierra Stone, 33 is a sassy, confident fresh breeze in the corporate world and in the fictional one. She’s not meek or mild and she doesn’t play games. She also doesn’t “shit where she eats.” And that’s probably why the new client, handsome Hale Lundström, 37, is throwing her off. Hale is instantly attracted to her and at times he lets his instincts take the lead.

“‘You are so damn sexy, mermaid. The night I met you, I went home and jerked off in the shower thinking about you. About your gorgeous hair, and those nipples, which yes, I will suck and your pretty smile…’”
Neither Hale nor Sierra can deny their pull and rapport, and thus negotiating a relationship becomes a slippery slope.

I’ll admit from the blurb I expected it to be way sexier—like all over the boardroom dirty.  It falls a little short in that kind of steam department, in quantity to be precise. That’s not due to any lack of chemistry; I definitely felt the sparks. This is a slow burn romance and it’s built up well. All in all, it’s a fairly sweet, light-hearted romance with quite a few ‘ahh’ moments.

“‘I like being with you...’” – Sierra
“‘I’ll one up you…I don’t like being without you.’” – Hale
Sierra is a great female character. She’s smart, down-to-earth, has integrity, and holds her own in a male dominated business world.
“‘You have perfect legs for Louboutins.’” – Hale
“‘I know, don’t I.’” – Sierra
I found the un-PC corporate bantering rather funny—“two bitches.” There were quite a few places that the story was good for a laugh.

Hale is a decent guy who wants the girl but makes a few missteps along the way. That’s not to say Hale doesn’t learn from his mistakes, but the prospective relationship is plagued with its fair share of misunderstandings and misperceptions. Oh, but drunk Hale is quite adorable and swoon-worthy.

Told via Sierra and Hale’s alternating first person point of view, my biggest critique would probably be that the chapters’ narration isn’t labeled. In other words, I was sometimes a paragraph or more into the chapter when I had to readjust who I thought was speaking. Their name at the top would be a simple fix to this confusion though.

Slave to Love is a stand-alone with a sweet ending!

~Excerpt~
I’m really not quite sure what to do with her. She’s not like the women I date. She’s not like the women I fuck. Yeah, I have women in my company, just not in my inner circle. So, I’m not sure how to balance having a close work confidante that I want to bang. So damn bad.
Would it be a bad thing to keep her in the conference room after dismissing the rest of the team, lock the doors, pick her up and seat her on the edge of the conference room table. Feel her melt into my hand as I run my fingertips down the front of her silk tank top. When she shivers, twist her taunting nipples until they harden, then stop and listen to her moan. Would that lost animal sound be coming from what I was doing to her or because I stopped? I wouldn’t wait to find out as I pushed her underwear aside, and harden even more, the moment I feel her wetness. Using her slick juices to moisten her clit, I’d finger her until she is gasping for air and reaching for me. I’d let just her nails and the tips of her finger graze my hard cock as I hang just out of reach. I would totally get off knowing that it is her need to grab me, making her wilder, and that crazed instinctual desire in her eyes would have me titanium hard. I need to be buried deep inside her.
I know my face is portraying a practiced and perfected look of deep concentration when my VP of Product Development asks for the second time, “Can we get the go-ahead on that, Hale?”
Shaking my head and drawing my brows together, “Give me your full brief in writing.” I act as if there’s something bothering me in what he presented, when in actuality I’m just buying time because I didn’t hear a word he said.
