REVIEW/RELEASE BLITZ: The Con by Justine Elvira

Release Day Banner.jpg
~Synopsis~
Jagger had three rules for every con:
1. Don't back out
2. Don't forget the story
3. Don't fuck it up
I broke them all.
I first met Jagger when I was just nine years old. He was an older boy who gave me twenty dollars to buy a new pair of ballet shoes after I dropped mine in the mud. That's when I fell in love with him.
And love would be my downfall.
I would run into Jagger over the years and I'd watch him as he'd hustle strangers out of their money with his latest scam. He lied, he cheated, and he took advantage of anyone he could. Most importantly, he never got caught.
Well, until he needed me to help him pull off his biggest con to date.
I thought I could do it. He told me it was easy to make money through deception, and I believed him because he had a lot of it.
But I should have known that nothing is guaranteed.
My name is Ronnie and now we're on the run.

4.5 Stars

Growing up in broken homes in a poor trailer park doesn’t offer a lot of a future for the kids that inhabit The Evergreen Subdivision.  For Jagger, it means from an early age a life of schemes, crimes, and cons. For Ronnie, it means dancing must be an escape.  But from the time she lays eyes on Jagger, fate might just choose their paths.

While the synopsis hooked me (I fancy ‘love on the run’ stories), the background really touched me. And so what you get with The Con is not just a hot sexy times on the run adventure—although you do get that! But you also get this sweet, intriguing tale of young love, sometimes bittersweet, but also real and touching.

The reader is first introduced to Jagger and Ronnie through a collection of pivotal moments in their adolescent and teen years as Ronnie negotiates growing up in a dead-end community, devoid of parental guidance with scare opportunities.  Jagger is instantly her hero, but he’s more of a rough around the edges, not always upstanding white knight.

Once the background story has thoroughly sucked you into these two characters and the pull they feel between each other, the circumstances are set up for ‘the con’ or perhaps, the con gone wrong.

Heartbreak, love, and fate are strong themes of the story.  The author does an amazing job establishing the sometimes desolate feel of Ronnie’s socio-economic hardships growing up as well as the psychological influence it’s had on Jagger’s self-identity.
“‛While you were worried about the Lola's of this world, I was worried that those kinds of women were all that was meant for me. I never thought in my wildest dreams I could have you.’"
You can’t help but root for them to get together and find some kind of “success,” a life beyond the only opportunity-limited world they’ve ever known.
“‛You're mine and I keep what's mine safe."
“No two words have ever been truer. I've been his since I was nine years old. It only took him eleven years to realize it, too.”
Yeah well, that’s a man for you. Jagger is quite the sexy bad boy. While there are hints at his non-committal womanizing way, it’s thankfully never shown in detail and when the situation gets sticky, it puts him on a steamy path with one woman, making Jagger a pretty sweet book boyfriend sure to make some ovaries weep.
“‛Your body is beautiful, twinkle toes. After what we shared last night you shouldn't have to hide it from me.’"
Risk, trust, and loyalty also play a role in the story and the plot. And danger lurks just around the corner.
“I'm okay if death comes tomorrow, as long as he continues to give me this perfect bliss tonight.”
The majority of the book, with the exception of a small section, is told by Ronnie’s first person POV. I did crave more of Jagger’s POV. It would have been nice to get inside his head a little more.  But, all in all, it’s a page-turner; full of emotion without angst, steamy encounters and an unpredictable suspense adventure plot in the second half.

Jagger leans in close to me and I stop breathing as I focus on the way his body moves. I watch his lips as he takes in staggered breaths.
"Have you ever been kissed, twinkle toes?"
I let out a shaky breath. "No."
Jagger's palms graze my bare knees before placing his hands on each side of the bed so my thighs are trapped between them.
He leans in closer. "Do you want that to change? Do you want me to kiss you?"
I can't speak. I can barely move, as the very thing I've dreamt about these past three years is finally about to come true. Jagger is asking me if I want him to kiss me. Somehow in my state of shock, as my blood begins to boil from anticipation and his lips proximity to mine, I'm able to nod my head yes.
He hovers above me as I look up into his eyes. His lips are just inches from mine. A million thoughts are racing through my head and I can’t seem to think straight. I want to remember every second of what's about to happen, but instead, just as his lips are about to brush against mine, I whisper, "Why did Ky call you Ace?"
He grins down at me, his gaze flickering to my lips before he looks back up into my green eyes. "Because I'm good at everything."
I don't have time to process his answer. My eyes flutter closed as his lips connect with mine. I don't move and my lips stay firmly closed as he kisses me. I feel hot... everywhere. My face is flushed, my lips are tingling and I don't want this kiss to end.
Jagger pulls away slightly. One of his hands comes up to my face and he places a finger on my lower lip. "Loosen up, twinkle toes. Part your lips and just go with it. I want to see what you taste like."
His finger slides away from my mouth and then his lips meet mine again. This time we move together, our lips fitting perfectly with each other. His kiss is soft and I feel his tongue graze my bottom lip before tracing my top lip. I open my mouth allowing his tongue to tangle with mine, and it's everything I imagined it would be.
He doesn't take it any further. The only parts of our bodies that touch are our mouths and when the kiss is over I know I'll never be the same.
Jagger's sparked something inside me that can only be tamed by him.
It was the best first kiss in the history of all first kisses and I know I'm going to crave more.

RELEASE/REVIEW: Criminal by Alex Abbott

~Synopsis~
He was my protector. My savior. He would have done anything for me.

Now he's a criminal, and he's taken everything.

He's my stepbrother and I hate him.

I'm homeless, jobless, desperate. And I had to come crawling back. To him.

Bad enough my college money went to post his bail, now I have to work in the same, seedy bar he deals out of, too, just to get by? And listen to him with girl after girl, night after night, while he walks around all shirtless and sexy during the day?

I'm going crazy--wanting him. I know I shouldn't.

Maybe he was once my Prince Charming, but now he's just a big, tattooed, pierced, cocky prick.

Problem is, even though he cut contact with me two years ago, I couldn't turn off the feeling I had for him. He's back, and my feelings are back too.

Now he's in trouble, with his gang, with the law.

And me... I'm in trouble, too.

Abby Tuney is down on her luck. And that’s almost putting it mildly. Her parents are gone, she has no money, and the only place she has to live is with her rough and rowdy older step-brother, Kaiden, who treats her like crap. Once her hero and the object of her crush, their relationship is now strained to say the least.

Abby and Kaiden both land themselves in a dangerous situation so the story has a distinct desolate feel. It borders on the angsty side of fiction, and both characters were a little too fickle, too much hot & cold, too much running away for my tastes.

All in all, taking the book as I whole, I didn’t dislike Abby or Kaiden but I didn’t love them either. Abby is a little naïve at times; Kaiden a little too uncouth and stubborn. Kaiden definitely didn’t make me all warm and fuzzy about him from the opening. Abby might have been aroused by him banging other women in the room next to hers before they get together but that type of thing is a big turn off for me. As the story progressed I worked past it but then Kaiden would bring up those women when they’re intimate, and I was reminded once again what didn’t endear me to him in the beginning.

The sex scenes are definitely dirty—literally at times. And when Kaiden isn’t referencing the women before her, Abby isn’t referring to her “cunny”, and neither of them are labeling each other as actual siblings, it’s pretty hot.
“In all my fantasies, I never knew it could feel like this, and my hands grip the cheap sheets as he impales me. He feels so hot, so thick, and I can feel the beating of his heart through his huge tool. Every pulse resonates through me, and for the first time, we’re really, truly linked.”
I give points for Kaiden redeeming himself in the end, although the ending felt a little rushed. I wanted a little more of how things worked out.

All in all, the premise showed potential. A little more character and story development (what happened to Abby’s other parent? Did Kaiden have a last name?) and a bit of grammar/writing clean up (there were also many sentences that told the story in both present and past tense) would make it stronger.

It will most appeal to die hard readers of edgier step-sibling romances (it follows all the typical step-sibling tropes).  Readers of action-adventure romance will also enjoy the light suspense and outside the law plot.

We meet King with last night’s regret. I tend to have a problem getting into romances where the opening scene depicts the H with some floozy even if he is being a jerk so maybe that led me down the road to meh early on.

King is plain cocky and conceited so his POV chapters, while colorfully written, didn’t make him book boyfriend material for me. His initial and subsequent meetings with Phoenix felt abrasive, and I honestly didn’t feel their connection. In the long run I suppose that was good that I didn’t get too into it because what actually unfolds is a little different.

I’ll leave it at that to avoid spoilers. Let’s just say that the twist ending in this book felt rather strange. It was more like something you’d find on a daytime soap opera than in most contemporary romances. If you like those types of crazy plot twists, then you’ll enjoy this, but if you prefer something a little more firmly rooted in “reality,” than it will disappoint.  I'm not saying it's a bad story or that it doesn't have it merits, but it's not what I was expecting from the blurb.

PHOENIX

“Aw, Kitten,” he places his hands on both sides of my face, “Don’t be mad, I had to make sure you couldn’t leave…and I really don’t regret one fucking bit of it. Seeing you like this is worth it,” he says as he leans in to place a quick kiss to my lips.

“You’re straight up crazy, you know that, right?”

“That’s debatable.”

“No, there’s no debate, you, sir, are fucking cuckoo for cocoa puffs.”

“Uh huh, that has to be the lamest thing I’ve ever heard come out of your mouth.”

My jaw drops at his ribbing. “Dick!” I yell as I smack him in the arm.

“Okay, sorry…but it’s the truth.”

I smack him again, “Watch it, mister, I bite.”

“Oh, don’t threaten me with a good time, Kitten,” he says with a gleam in his eye.

“Good God!”

The doorbell rings. “Saved,” he laughs, “Ready to eat?”

I walk away from him, and out of his bedroom, doing my best to sashay my ass as I pass, and throw over my shoulder, “I have something you can eat.”

He growls, fucking growls so low and deep that the tingling is back between my legs. He snatches my upper arms and flings me backwards to him, my back to his bare chest.

“Careful, Kitten, I already want to make sure your pussy feels me there for the next week. Keep that shit up and I’ll make sure you ache from my cock for the next fucking year.”

BOOK REVIEW: Taken Hostage by Kinky Bank Robbers series by Annika Martin

One adrenaline loving female. Three erotic bank robbers named after gods. A fun, light-hearted, action packed erotic adventures series!

The Hostage Bargain
4.75 Stars
[posted 7/17]

Thrill craving sheep farmer and bank teller Melinda Prescot is bored with her life. Poor girl makes celebrity priced quilts and works at a rural bank open on Sundays!  That all changes when three intense masked men rob said bank and Melinda becomes a willing participant.  Thor, Odin, and Zeus—yes their alias’s are all gods and rightly so with the skills they possess.  This trio has different personalities but they share a bond, a brotherhood, which attracts Melinda to them just as much as their good looks.
“Thor was like the overdue-for-an inspection wooden rollercoaster at a small county fair—thrilling and quite possibility dangerous in a very real way. Odin was more like the sleek and twisting metal rollercoaster at the mammoth theme park, specially designed for maximum thrills. Zeus was the cave of mystery, and you don’t know what’s in there, but you suspect it’s dangerous, what with the bleached bones strewn around the entrance.”
I have to say that while I’m a one-man/one-woman kind of reader, this page-turning ménage story has sucked me right in. (No pun intended).  It’s obviously not a traditional love story—though it’s clear the foursome’s feelings run deeper than just sex. There’s a camaraderie and friendship that’s appealing, an element of the ultimate female sexual adventure fantasy with characters that are all likeable. Heck, if I was Melinda I don’t think I could have picked just one either, not that that’s an option in the scenario to begin with.

Told solely from Melinda’s first person POV, it’s a sexy adventure tale about embracing your desires, living life to the fullest, and finding a place where you truly belong.  I was right there with Ice, wanting her to become a god too.

Despite the erotic premise, this is actually a fairly light-hearted read which I found refreshing.

There’s sexy humor:
“‘Are we going to f*ck or do feng shui up there?’”
There’s plenty of sexy, kinky adventures:
“‘Must we spank and f*ck you before we even get into the hot tub?’”
Throw in some dangerous chases and dirty thinking and dirty talking resourceful men, and you’re in for a fun ride—a little dirty, dangerous fantasy escape.

Who are the gods’ real identities? Can the criminals escape their pursuers? Will Melinda return to the sheep farm?

This is the first book in the Taken Hostage by Hunky Bank Robbers series. There’s no cliffhanger but the gang’s story continues.  So folks, I’ll be spending the rest of my weekend with bank robbers having 1-clicked the box set!

The Wrong Turn
 4.75 Stars

The second installment of the Taken Hostage by Hunky Bank Robbers series is a short adventure segment including a bank heist, a romantic date, and of course, sex!
“It was like I’d stumbled into a Disneyworld of dangerous sex fantasies.”
The gods continue to be fantasy worthy, the story engaging, and the escapades original.
“‘These rocks on my back make me want to f*ck.’”
Though it’s more novella in length, it still provides a deeper look at the level of loyalty and respect among The God Pack, making this so much more than just an erotic tale.

The Deeper Game
 4.75 Stars

The God Pack has its sights set on the toughest, riskiest heist yet. The stakes are high and then the danger gets deeper when Isis receives a threatening delivery. Now Thor, Odin, and Zeus not only have to scope out banks, they also have to sniff out the rat in their criminal underworld.

The sexy adventures continue; ultimate fantasies are granted. But despite its erotic nature, love runs strong in this tale of one woman and three bank robbers.
“‘Never with anyone else baby. Ever…This thing is as real as it gets.’”
Ah, swoon a little as your heart and panties melt for these men committed to one woman.  The gods exhibit how amazing they are, their best qualities shining through in this one. They even display their awesomeness dispensing some insightful advice to their fellow male criminals, who make interesting additions to the story. I loved how they put this:
“‘It’s like the parole board…They don’t give a shit about excuses. They need to see you have insight into how you f*cked up and that you have control over your own actions going forward.’”
It’s all about commitment to the pack, but will vengeance overshadow the family they believe in?

Frustrated with Josh’s mixed signals, Haylee finally puts it all on the line. Blurring both their professional and personal lives can they keep things temporary as planned or will they both realize some things weren’t meant to end?

~Review~
4.25 Stars

Haylee and Josh sucked me in right from the beginning. The opening scene which is the catalyst to their first meeting and subsequent new working arrangements was cute and light-hearted.

Josh is rather refreshing in that he didn’t always fit the typical contemporary romance hero mold. He’s both in control and vulnerable at the same time. He has his flaws, but they make him seem real. His character comes with a few twists/reveals, one rather unique, that were intriguing to read as they unfolded.
"'If we do this, we do it my way, which I'll warn you is complicated.'"
I loved how Haylee kept Josh on his toes and didn’t let him get away with some of the double standards that cropped up as they negotiated their secret romance and his hot/cold moments. Haylee’s responses to various early scenarios were commendable, and for most of the book she made a pretty good strong female role model in fiction. The author does a good job of depicting the difference among the sexes in the process.

Haylee and Josh kept me turning pages for most of the book. The first half or more is the strongest, most engaging, as they test out the dynamics of an “office fling.”  It was easy to see how the two fall in love and their exchanges of information (i.e.'tell me something') were a nice addition to the romance. There’s also plenty of fun fantasy moments as Haylee gets a lot of what most girls dream about.

Towards the end I was a little disappointed at how Haylee handled certain things though. I understood she had her own issues she was dealing with, but she’d communicated so well with Josh up to that point that their “relationship troubles” in the final chapters were frustrating. None the less, it’s a good story, and I liked the way at least one of their obstacles worked out.

This is the first book in the stand-alone The "Something" Series. The supporting characters in this one are likeable, well developed additions to Josh and Haylee's story so they should be promising characters in their own. I look forward to Brian and Sasha’s story (Ask Me Something), and as well as Josh’s brother's (Bet Me Something)!

BOOK REVIEW: Jerked by BB Hamel

~Synopsis~
My future stepbrother. My personal bodyguard.

Colin Blake is a mob a**hole. He’s rude, crude, and loves a good fight. He’s arrogant, self-assured, and won’t hesitate to take what he wants.

And we’re stuck in the same house. All because my psycho ex-boyfriend is chasing me down and won’t stop until he steals me back.

Worst of all, my stepbrother bodyguard treats me like a prisoner, and I’m supposed to act like I’m not staring when he walks around in just a towel. The truth is, I hate him for jerking me around when were younger, but I still want to taste his lips whenever we talk.

I can’t stand it.

I hate that I need his help. I hate that I want his body. Even with the mob ready to go to war, all I can think about is his cocky grin driving me insane.

Jerked contains mature content (explicit sexual situations, violence, and mature language), and is recommended for audiences 18+

Jerked is a standalone, full-length novel. No cliffhanger.

Irish mob daughter Brenna O’Brian has returned home to escape her Italian mobster ex and mend fences with her estranged father.  For her protection she’s assigned a bodyguard— Colin Blake, her almost adopted brother/second in line to her father.

In the years since she’s been away, Colin has gotten hotter, harder, and sexier than when she last crushed on him, and while he might have left an opportunity with her escape in the past, he’s not about to make that mistake twice.
“She was the first woman that I really wanted, and the first one I had turned down. I spent many, many nights regretting that choice since then, and many, many lonely days imagining what it would have been like to slip my hard cock into the Princess’s wet little pussy.”
Colin is a confident, dirty talking, dominant, dangerous mob boy, packing guns and condoms. He breaks knees for a living and he gets a thrill from it. Turns out the one thing he enjoys more than fighting though is f*cking.
“‛I’d love to pull those sexy pants down around your ankles, bend you over, and slip my tongue along your soaked pussy…We can do it right here, if you want. I can make you come on my tongue while you try not to make too much noise.’”
Colin is undeniably hot and the perfect bad boy book boyfriend. He’s well endowed and ready to go at all times:
“I was practically tearing out of my pants. I wanted to bend her over right there, f*ck her up against the historical fiction section.”
He’s giving and generous:
“‛I’d soak through a hundred more shirts to taste that again.’”
And despite his cut-throat profession, he has an upstanding sweet sweeter side to him as well. ;-)
“I’m the Santa Claus of violent criminals.”
Brenna is a likeable character too and one lucky girl. Once things heat up between them, they get really steamy. And does this boy have serious stamina! Just reading about it practically had me panting.

Told via Brenna and Colin’s alternating POV, the story has touches of suspense and just the right amount of drama without angst.  In the beginning they are both harboring a slight secret from each other but I was pleased that it wasn’t drug out and didn’t cause unnecessary misunderstanding.  It was refreshing to get a couple working together and not letting outside forces separate them. This story is all about the sexy adventures and action plot.  I also enjoyed the fact that despite all the girls that Colin could have, once Brenna reenters the picture he only has eyes for her.

My only real critique was a few choices of wording. Brenna (and I believe even Colin) refer to her privates as her “spot” a little too frequently.  It was different but a little tiresome after a while. Also, Colin is often referred to as her step-brother, but I’m not sure that’s entirely accurate as step-siblings are usually defined by having one parent married to another, which is not the case here.  None-the-less, those are just minor issues and the story is still an incredibly enjoyable read.  Colin and Brenna make a good couple, and I recommend them for your next steamy read.

~Book Review~
3.5 Stars
“Sunshine came back in my life, if only for a moment, and I saw things clearly for the first time in months.”
A random coffee shop encounter is only the beginning for fledgling photographer Nina King and part-time bartender/dog trainer Aaron Masters.

The opening scenes—their initial meeting—I felt was really well done as it pulled me into the story and the characters.  Both Aaron and Nina had a lot of potential, and I was intrigued about Aaron’s criminal past. After that it seemed like their relationship was really rushed with Nina pondering changing her relationship status on Facebook and Aaron wanting to change his whole life before they even had a second date. Don’t get me wrong, Aaron needed and deserved something good in his life; it would have just added so much more to the romance if there had been more build-up so their chemistry could simmer a little. As it was, it felt like a lot of insta love and insta lust.
Golly, I’ve never felt this full.”
“‛F*ck, Sunshine. You’re so tight.’”
About that! Their love scenes were pretty sexy and definitely frequent but their dialogue was a little mixed matched. Nina’s ‘goodness’ and ‘golly’ drove me nuts! At first it was just a little eye roll worthy but then it become annoying.  She was just too sweetsy for me without the background behind it.

Overall, it was an okay read. Generally light-hearted and angst-free which I enjoy but there were places I would have liked to see a little more development, characters/plot points that I felt could have been expanded on for a little more excitement or a richer story.

~Excerpt~
One more taste,” Aaron whispers. Leaning in, he gently cups my face in his hands. He gives me a gently sucking, nipping kiss that leaves me wanting more, and my hands gripping his arms are not wanting to let go. Ever.
“Do you want to go somewhere?” I breathe out. “I’d invite you in, but I have a roommate.”
“Yes.” His breath is tickling the hairs around my face as he chuckles.
I smile brightly releasing him from my hold. I’m craving more of what I know this man can give me.
Gentle dominance, and honest affection.
“But not tonight,” he says, smiling and shaking his head. Then, with his thumb and forefinger, he takes my chin and admonishes, “Don’t pout.”
“But—”
“Not tonight,” he says sternly, then leaning in, he runs his nose along my neck and whispers, “there’s always tomorrow.”
I shiver.
“Okay,” I say softly, though every pulse point in my body is pounding in anticipation.
There is no way I’m going to be able to sleep tonight, without taking the edge off first. At least now I wouldn't feel as sketchy, like I’m violating him in some way, when I imagine Aaron as I power up Mr. Satisfaction tonight.
Thank goodness I remembered to buy batteries today!
“What time are you done with work tomorrow night?”
Work. Right, that thing you go to where you earn money. Which, I don’t exactly have. Because I'm a loser, who has no real skills and is supported by her parents.
“I don’t have to work tomorrow,” I say, suddenly uncomfortable.
“Good, I’ll pick you up at five when my shift is over. Make sure to dress warmly. I don’t want you getting cold during your surprise,” he says, smiling brightly.
“Okay.”
“Goodnight, Sunshine,” he draws me close, pressing a gentle kiss to my temple.
“Goodnight,” I say, exiting the truck. Walking towards the building, I turn to see him watching me. Waiting for me to get inside safely. Underneath that rough exterior, he really is a gentleman.

Growing up in New England, Rene spent her childhood playing make-believe, acting out stories with her Barbies, Legos, My Little Ponies, and Playmobile. She has since taken to writing down the dramas that invade her mind.

Authors such as Jane Austen, Kristen Ashley, Cherise Sinclair, Sierra Cartwright, Donna Fletcher, Jennifer Ashley and Bianca Giovanni have inspired her. They all create strong female characters, swoon-worthy men, and stories that leave their readers with the hope, that you, too, will find your own H.E.A.!

Rene also enjoys reading, baking, seeing movies, going to museums, and spending time with her friends and family.

Rene lives in Washington DC.

She is also known as Kitty Bennet, on the book blog, Lit. 4 Ladies, which she runs with her sister.
