CHARACTER INTERVIEW: 5 Questions Plus with Dex and the characters from Ashley Suzanne's Calling Card

Relationships are for the weak. Those individuals who have a problem being just that … individuals, people who can’t fathom standing on their own two feet and not being defined by another human being.

I’m not, nor have I ever been, one of those people.

I’m me. Nothing more, nothing less. You can take it or leave it, but usually, they take it. And I proudly give it. Every. Last. Inch.

Companionship only lasts as long as it takes me to leave my card on the counter as I’m leaving before she wakes up.

My name’s Dexter MacFadden. What’s your number?

*Reader Warning #2
This interview is for mature audiences because this is Dex so of course he's going to speak candidly and that's why we enjoy him ;-)

Welcome everyone to Book-Bosomed Book Blog. Thanks for joining us. We’ll get things started with Dexter…

Q1. Dex—You shared quite an array of sexual experiences, good and bad. Were there many 1’s? What was your worst experience?

A.  I had a few 1's ... not too many, but there have been a few duds ... The first one that comes to mind ... okay, so, I was at a club in Amsterdam, and I may have enjoyed a few pastries (yeah, you know what I mean) and I saw this sexy little bombshell ... so fucking hot ... long, straight blonde hair with the lightest blue eyes ... not to mention the fantastic rack ... we ended up at her hotel and the bombshell said she'd be back in a second, she needed to change, so I waited on the bed for her to come back ... this bitch came back with another dude and was trying to get a threesome out of me ... hell to the fuck no ... I've never ran so fast in my life ... didn't even get to see how good she was ... automatic one.

Q2. Dex—You now realize how wrong your calling card system was. You really needed a wake-up call. How did it feel when the tables were turned on you? And how do you think most of the women that you left cards for would have rated you had they all had the opportunity?

A. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it was wrong ...because for the longest time, it worked for me.  It was a great system and I'm sure there's a bunch more dudes out there that wish they had the balls that I do, but having the shit flipped on me ... I saw red ... I was having visions of me being that rockstar dude that ate the heads off bats ... Daniella was the fucking bat ... and baby, you never have to worry, I'm a perfect 10 each and every damn time .. that's why I assume they'd be so mad ... get fucked really good then left behind ... yeah, that would piss me off too.

Q3. Dex—Tell us a little about your relationship with Briar, past and present. Do you feel that everything happened for a reason and that you two had to be in the right time and place?  How would you have reacted to the possibility of being a father back then?

A. First and foremost, Briar Kennedy is my best friend ... always has been, always will be ... we connected so much further than just a random screw ... she's real ..she was with me before I became wealthy and she'd be there when all of it dried up ... that says a lot about a person.  I'd like to say if we could have made a go of it a decade ago, we would have ... but both of us had things that we wanted to accomplish ... and she really did love Erik ... I always wanted her to have that happiness, and for a while she had it ... I'm not sure how I feel about being a father now, but I can tell you, regardless if Katelynn is my daughter or not, I'm all she has ... and she's mine ... I love that little angel more than I can even describe ... but Briar is starting to hit me up for another baby ... oy ... she's even been caught looking up vasectomy reversals ... I swear, if those fuckers want to dig back into my nuts, Briar's gonna have to find a sweet way to con me into it.

Follow up to Q3: Dex, out of curiosity, what prompted you to have a vasectomy in the first place at such a young age? (And are you sure it worked or was that after the...well we'll call it the Katelynn possibility?)

Dex: After what happened between my parents ... or at least, what I THOUGHT happened between my parents, I didn't ever want to bring a child into the world and have it end the same  ... and my neutering was done just after Briar moved away when we were younger.

Q4. Briar—So Dexter believed that all those women he was with knew what they were getting into and just thought they’d be the one to “save” him from his “foolish ways.”  In the end, it was you who made him want just one woman. Did you see the real man all along?  Tell us how you see Dexter.

A. Girl, please.  Dexter is a man in his own category.  He's the biggest asshole you'll ever meet, but he's my asshole.  I think I may have loved him in one way or another since the first moment I met him.  The biggest thing about Dex, and any man, they just want to be accepted.  Too many women run around thinking that men need to be trained ... that's a lie.  Men need to be accepted and when you find the one you can't life without, you'll find a way to accept things from him that you wouldn't anyone else.  He's flawed, but it's because of those flaws that I love him.

*Interviewer inserts comment* That’s very sweet, Briar. Dex is very lucky to have you.

Q5. Nicholas—What did you think of Dex’s cataloging system? Have you ever considered trying it yourself? Do you have a story to tell sometime?

A. Dex is my boy.  I can't judge him or his system.  Is it something that I'd ever do myself, no, probably not ... but it's not my place to make comments on something that I know nothing about.  And I've been chatting a little with Ashley about telling my story ... there's a few chapters written so far.  I'd like her to hurry up, but this lady is hard to nail down .. she has so many projects she's already working on, I might have to sit on the back burner until next spring *wink wink*

Follow up to Q5: Nicholas, do you miss not having Dex to party with now that he has Briar? Do those two make settling down seem appealing?

Nicholas: I don't think I'm into the whole settling down thing.  I mean, I was before, but that's a story for another day.  And I do miss Dex.  I miss my job ... but I've been really lucky to start driving for someone else, a little bit more security.  I'm sure I'll tell you all about it in the Spring of 2015.

*Interviewer inserts comment* Inquiring minds are already intrigued to read about it.

Plus… Five rapid fire questions for Dex...

#1 Favorite food to bring to bed - strawberries, chocolate, or whip cream?

Dex: Who needs food when you have pussy?

#2 What’s on your bedside table?

Dex: My phone, a lamp, Briar's lotion, Katelynn's brush, a water ring because Briar doesn't understand the need for coasters, the TV remote and the case of a Frozen DVD

#3 Name one thing you’d like Briar to do more of.

Dex: Is she here? *looks around* Okay ... I think it's safe *checks again* ... I'd really like her to stop trying to make Italian meatballs ... they're terrible and I think they're slowly killing me ... she just needs to never do that again.
Briar - What do you mean they're terrible?  Dammit Dex, why lie to me
Dex - Baby ... I thought you weren't here ... I'm sorry ... they taste like dog's ass
Briar - You have a habit of licking dog's asses?  Should I get tested for something?
Dex - Moving on ....
Briar - Yeah, we're moving right the fuck along ... I'll meet you in the bedroom when you're done ... *walks out the door* ... after I said all those nice things about him *mumbling from the other side of the door*

#4 Morning person or night person?

Dex: Morning ... morning sex ... sex in the morning ... shower sex in the morning ... breakfast sex ... yeah ... I’m gonna say Morning is my final answer.

#5 First thing you wash in the shower?

Dex: Briar's back <---- yeah ... oh yeah ... see above.

BOOK REVIEW: Calling Card by Ashley Suzanne

Calling Card by Ashley Suzanne

4 Stars

Dexter MacFadden is a world famous playboy photographer who has no use or interest in women beyond the time it takes to bed them. To keep them at bay after the deed, Dex has devised a little system. He sneaks out after they fall asleep and leaves them his calling card with a number (really a rating) on the back.

Dex has all the details worked out. If they score above a 6 then he may call on them again if he’s back in that city. If they score low and call him, well then they are simply handled by his answering service. He even has a little app for his sex life which he calls FB. It’s not Facebook, but the B does stand for book and the F stands for... you get the picture.

Is Dex an insensitive, cocky man-whore? Oh absolutely. But are his early exploits funny to read and thus you like him despite his flaws?
“It’s perfectly acceptable to nod your head in agreement, I’m not judging.”
But after years of avoiding confrontation and scandal with his hook-up system and cocky attitude, both finally fail him. Media exposure forces Dex to lie low and he retreats to the only two girls who have ever meant something to him—his one and only ex-girlfriend and her daughter.

Briar is a former model; the woman who made his career. They have a long history, a former relationship that has resulted in a dear friendship. But once Dex is forced to reexamine his life (his whole life even beyond his sexual shenanigans) he finds that Briar may mean even more to him than he ever realized.

From here the mood of the story shifts a bit. The beginning is humorous and sexy, the middle sweet, and the end a little melancholy so the book takes you on a bit of a ride. Dex must weather the storm of his damaged professional career and public image, investigate his feelings for Briar, and return to his past to be set free of some personal demons.

The narration is witty as Dex is no holds bared with his commentary and descriptions of his sex life.  This book is somewhat unique in that it is told entirely from the male point of view, and while it would have been nice to have some perspective from Briar to get a better feel for her character, this is largely about Dexter’s journey.

It’s a fairly quick read (or maybe it's just that easy to stay engaged with), and I would have ultimately liked to see more to his relationship with Briar and maybe less of his exploits with other women after a certain point. But it's still an engaging story, and there is an HEA, no cliffhanger, and an epilogue that shows just how far Dex has come.

Do you want Dexter to leave you a calling card?  Check him out and score him ;-)

Book Review: Part of Me by Haven Francis

4.5 Stars

Part of Me starts out a year prior to the main time frame of the book. Paxton Alvarado has arrived in rural River Bluff, Minnesota where he’s been exiled by his socialite mother. At a field party the first night he meets free-spirited and stubborn Jessa Fairfield, shares one explosive kiss with her, and then blows her off out of fear of getting too attached.

Jessa’s character was first introduced in Love is Relative (her friend Emily’s story) and Paxton was introduced in the follow up, Love is Absolute. The events from the opening scene of Part of Me coincide with Love is Absolute but it is not necessary to read in order to follow Jess and Pax’s story. (But feel free to check them out!)

We pick up a year later and Jessa is in Chicago for college where she’s unhappy with her boyfriend, Dylan, and dissatisfied with what she sees as her fake college life that isn’t true to her personality. A phone call to Pax, now back in Venice, California with his dad, puts Jessa in contact with his old friend Violet and smack in the middle of Pax’s old Chicago life…and his old bed in Violet’s spare bedroom.

Violet and Jessa are kindred spirits and they hit it off well.  Jessa soon discovers that there is a lot more to Pax than she realized. His former Chicago friends who are now apart of Jessa’s circle remember a fast, loose, angry, and moody Pax (Chicago Paxton), while she has only known a laid-back and relaxed Pax (Minnesota Paxton). Not to mention there’s his Venice lifestyle of surfing, skating, tattoos, and weed with his father’s side of the family. (Can we say California Paxton?)

Pax is all those things rolled into one and he’s also adorable. As a character, he’s impossible not to like and root for. And what you are quickly rooting for is for him and Jessa to get together. They have irresistible chemistry and attraction, and their sexual tension is off the charts.
"'You need to get schooled. There are three things I have in abundance—a big dick, the skills to use it, and a value sized box of XL condoms.'" —Paxton
Of course it’s not that easy though. These are two nineteen and twenty year old kids who think they have life and love all figured out and then realize what they think is all wrong.

Pax can’t handle his former buddies hitting on Jessa so it isn’t long before he’s back in Chicago, the town he’s sworn never to return to, in a “Jessa take-over” plot.  Pax knows what they have between them is something special. They just haven’t acted on it. Till now.
“We weren't going to have each other, but we were living off the energy that blew up when we were together.” —Paxton
What they do have already is a solid, dependable friendship and Jessa, who has sworn off all future committed relationships and only wants a friends with benefits relationship with men, isn’t even sure she wants to risk ruining their friendship by adding the benefits. Jessa is only interested in the physical, not the emotional from a guy, even though she’s intrigued to know more about Pax’s past and understand the boy who makes her feel the most secure when she’s cuddled in his arms. She has walls that she’s built up and her mixed signals are confusing the hell out of Pax.
“She’s feisty as hell and argumentative about the little shit, but when it comes down to the things that should make her bawl like a baby or scream like a lunatic or burst with happiness…she doesn't do those things. So I don’t know how she’s feeling about us.”
Pax knows what he wants—the girl cuddled up next to him, but he still wants to keep his past a secret. Jessa isn’t quite as self aware. She wants laid; she just doesn’t realize how much it’s Pax that she needs to do the job.

Can Pax get the girl without revealing his troubled past?  Can Jessa let go of her fears and insecurities about relationships before she loses the most important one that’s right in front of her? Can Jess and Pax trust the advice of their friends? Can they both avoid the thing they most fear—getting hurt?

I’ll admit to being on the edge of my seat over ‘will they or won’t they’ hook up with each other before giving in to someone else as well as whether Pax would go back to California or get caught in Chicago.  Sometimes I had to groan and smile at the same time over their plans for each other, just knowing they were probably making matters worse. But that fits their ages so it’s not a flaw by any means.

There is humor. There is heartache. There is drama. There are some hot and sexy encounters as well as adorable moments—Pax’s little scene in the diner to get Jessa over her anxiety with the word date was priceless. Told via Pax and Jess’s alternating point of view, the story delivers a HFN ending (no cliffhanger) while setting the stage for the second book, Inside of You.

Part of Me Excerpt

“Ready to call it a night, beso?”
“Yeah. It’s been a long day – having you around is tiring,” I tell him, flicking him on his arm before heading to my… our… room.
“As far as I can tell it’s you who is fucking up the entire vibe of the city. Things were pretty mellow last time I was here.”
“Funny,” I tell him, heading to the dresser and pulling out my shorts and tank top.
I turn to Paxton who is stripping out of his jeans- his hoodie and t-shirt are already on the floor. I can’t stop myself from running my eyes over his body as he stands before me. He really is beautiful in the coarsest of ways. I really wish his friends hadn’t put me on lockdown these past few weeks because a beautiful man like Paxton, standing before me in the flesh, is making my insides pound. Jesus, I need to get off ASAP. I look away from Paxton and peel off my dress and bra before pulling on my tank top. I turn back to him as I step into my shorts. He’s lounging in the bed, his arms propped above his head, the tats on the underside of his forearms displayed. I’m very aware that Paxton is watching me dress – something that he has seen before, but his heavy-lidded eyes have me working quick to get myself covered up.
“Pax, are we really sharing that tiny bed?”
“Yeah, beso, we are. Get your ass in here, I want to go to sleep.”
I let out a long breath and then go to him, sliding under the covers, acutely aware of the extra body that is now with me. I’m prepared for him to sling his arm around me but he doesn’t. We just lay next to each other in silence. I’m tired but I can’t sleep, not with him in this bed with me. So close, but in every form of the word, so far away.
“What happened with you and Elijah tonight?” he asks in his deep, quiet voice.
“You know… same shit as usual. You realize that your friends have been all over any guy that even looks my way?” I ask, curious how much of this long process was dictated by him.
He lets out a low laugh. “F*cking with your game, huh?”
“Yeah, they were. I finally find a guy that’s not terrified by the mere mention of your name and… surprise, surprise - the ultimate ladies’ man is nothing but a commitmentaholic underneath his bad boy skin. You would think I would be every man’s dream- all I want is a little release, a little fun. But can I find it? No, Pax, I cannot. I haven’t gotten any action since Dylan and the only kind of action I’ve gotten from him in the last few months is the husband kind. What the hell is wrong with me?” I know I’m spewing, but with anyone but Pax, Emily and Natalie, talking about my unconventional preferences comes off the wrong way. I need a verbal release. I need so many kinds of releases it’s not even funny.
“So he pulled out a ring and you bolted?”
“Yes, he got down on one knee and everything,” I say, snidely. “No. But he pulled the commitment talk out of his ass. I blame you,” I tell Paxton ‘cause I’m pretty sure it was his fault. “You stroll into town, move into my bed, flaunt your good looks in his face and my potential partner in sex pulls out the lockdown.”
Paxton laughs quietly before turning his back to me and making it known he’s calling it a night. “Keep trying, Jess. Your perfect man will come along eventually.”
“There is no perfect man,” I say, hunkering down into bed. “You are about the closest thing that I will ever have to my perfect man.”
“I’ve never gotten you off,” he mutters.
“Exactly, you’re the only guy in my life that I’ve been close to who has never gotten me off and therefore we haven’t ruined what we have. Sometimes I think about that night when I first met you. You were such a prick, but I’m glad. If we would have eventually had sex we wouldn’t have become friends. I wouldn’t have you in my life. It’s scary to think about,” I whisper. Paxton is so quiet, I wonder if he’s sleeping. “I don’t ever want to lose you.”
I wait a minute for him to respond, but it’s clear he’s dozed off. I close my eyes and try to do the same but I can’t. Now that Paxton’s here I just want to be with him. I want to stay up late and talk like we used to. I want to fall asleep on his chest like I used to. I turn and wrap my arms around his naked stomach, fitting my cheek against his warm back. I take in a big breath, letting Paxton’s familiar scent and his warm body comfort me.

Book Review: Inside of You by Haven Francis

4.25 stars

Inside of You finds Jessa and Pax three months later and everything is going well for them. Pax is back to playing in Polly and writing new material. Jessa is studying design in college. They are in a good place with each other and those around them.
“We were never us until we had each other.” –Jessa
But their moments of zen don’t last long when Pax’s former Chicago life starts rearing it’s ugly head in the form of his ex-girlfriend, Stella. Plain and simple, Stella is a real manipulative snake. And the intense reaction she produces from Paxton has Jessa struggling again with the lasting power of their relationship.

This time around their relationship feels even more intense, at times all consuming.  There is something so powerful about what they have and it makes the story very gripping.
“I think anything’s possible when I’m inside of you. Yeah, I think part of me, part of my soul, just fled my body and went straight into yours.” –Paxton
Issues that were a part of their relationship in the first book (Pax’s reluctance to discuss the past, Jessa’s insecurities, both of their fears of the other leaving) crop back up again and are compounded by the events that play out.

Sometimes you just want to shake the sense into both of them. They both make mistakes or more accurately don’t handle the situation in the best way.  Yet, Haven Francis does an amazing job of depicting both sides of their issues. You understand why Jessa is so distraught over what she has seen and yet you want her to move past it at the same time. And Pax clearly makes some bad choices and indulges in some self-destructive behavior, and yet when he steps up to the plate, he’s easy to forgive in the readers’ eyes.

Despite his week-long downward spiral, Pax is willing to go the distance—literally— so Jessa can breathe.  By the later part of the book it is Jessa’s turn to do some self-examination and some soul searching if she’s ever to have a healthy relationship with Paxton. In the process, some background on Jessa’s past is revealed.

But Inside of You is about putting the past behind you, living in the present, and finding yourself.  It’s about learning the big things and little things about each other, loving in a way that supports each other while at the same time allowing the other person to find out who they are; giving each other space without ever leaving; and going through the bad together and coming out in a better place.

This sequel is more angsty than the first book, and largely the humor/banter that we saw in Part of Me is absent this time around. Jessa and Pax both go to much darker places in their lives and in their minds.  As individuals, they are both broken and so much deserving of healing. As a couple, they are passionate and leave you with a bit of a book hang-over as you ponder the depths of their connection. Yet their journey towards the end takes them back to the good places they once were but with new self-awareness and new understandings of love and devotion.

Author Interview:  5 Questions with Author Haven Francis

Q1. You have a background in art and English literature and you’ve mentioned works like Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar and Charlotte Perkins Gillman’s The Yellow Wallpaper as heavily influencing you. As a former English major myself, I’d second the notion that they are both profound works and ‘must reads’ for any feminist lit study (my old concentration by the way).  So rolling with the topic of women’s roles in fiction, let’s talk a little bit about Jessa. She’s a strong female character who in Part of Me is actually taking on what is typically viewed as the guy’s MO, wanting just a physical relationship with no emotions. In fact, for a good deal of the book, the roles are reversed and it’s Paxton who’s wanting the whole relationship, emotional package and all.  What was your inspiration for Jessa and how has your literature background influenced her character?

A. That’s such a great, thoughtful question and I wish I had an equally great answer, but when I initially wrote Jessa into Love Is Relative (my first published book) and established her independent personality and her views on love, it was done without a great deal of thought. She was essentially Emily’s Violet so at that time I wasn't overly involved with the decisions Jessa was making because I was was writing through Emily's eyes.

My husband likes to tell people I’m the most independent woman he has ever met (this is not a compliment, by the way). I don't necessarily see myself that way, but he might be right because writing Jessa was extremely easy for me. I relate to her personality more than any other character I have ever written. By the time I wrote Part of Me, she had been taking up so much room in my head and I understood her so well that I never really had a moment where I had to sit back and really consider who she was because I just knew. I can say though, that if she hadn't been so fiercely independent and  unwilling to succumb to a man, Part of Me would have never been written because she was my inspiration.

Q2. What other works have influenced your writings? What are you currently reading?

A. There are so many authors in so many different genres who I love and admire so it’s hard to name specific influences. There is definitely a certain style of writing that affects me more than others. As you mentioned in the above question, reading The Bell Jar and The Yellow Wallpaper was life changing for me. Before that I had read books that had made me cry and made my heart hurt but I had never read anything that worked itself into me and drenched me in a feeling that I couldn't shake. I wasn't depressed, but Sylvia Plath made me feel like I was. I wasn't crazy, but Charlotte Perkins Gillman made me question that fact. It was alarming in some ways but it opened my eyes and my mind up to the possibility of words.  I did major in English literature and for years I ate up all the great classics and had my love affair with the Beats and I experienced something new, and often great, with everything I read but ultimately what makes a lasting impression on me, and therefore my writing, are books that unlock something inside of me that I cannot easily forget and for reasons I don’t always understand. Off the top of my head I would add Wally Lamb’s She’s Come Undone and Toni Morrison’s Beloved to that list. Recently, The Night Gwen Stacy Died and It’s Kind of a Funny Story affected me greatly. Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe I just have a fascination with mentally ill or depressed characters?

As far as novels that inspired me to write and publish my own books… there are two.  A few years ago I was in a reading slump. When I would go to the library my method for choosing books was to look for an orange spine which meant a book was probably published by Penguin and I generally like books published by Penguin. But even that super reliable method was not working out for me so one night I picked up a book a friend had given me. The one I had no interest in reading because I didn't do Sci-Fi or Horror or whatever genre a book about vampires fit into. Once I picked that book up I literally couldn't put it down which was something I hadn't experienced in a long time. Turns out that, really, it was a book about desperate, forbidden love and I was more than happy to take a break from reality and loose myself in the Twilight series. What made the greatest impact on me though, was an interview I read where Stephanie Myers talked about her experience writing that book. She said three things that stuck with me – she talked about how the series started with a dream she had about a girl in a meadow and a man with skin that sparkled (I’m working from my memory here, so my facts might be off) which literally sent chills through me because I had a computer full of “scenes” that I wrote down for no reason other than I wanted to remember the people I dreamt about and capture the way they felt about each other. She also said she wasn't necessarily a good “writer” but she was a pretty good story teller which was a freeing concept for me because as an English literature major who once had a professional writing career, I thought, if I were to write a book, it would have to be some great award winning masterpiece, which was not what I wrote. For the first time I considered doing something with all of those pieces of love stories sitting in my computer. She also talked about writing those books with a baby on her lap which I totally related to- she was a busy mom with little kids at home, just like me, and yet, she managed to write the Twilight series.

A few years later I downloaded a free book on my Nook, I believe it was The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen, but around that time I discovered two things – the New Adult romance genre and authors self-publishing their books, so I was reading a lot of both of these things in a very short amount of time. At that point in my life I had written my first book (which I have yet to publish) and had started researching the process of finding an agent which sounded so depressing and overwhelming that I never did anything beyond research it. This is silly to say because it was probably less than two years ago, but I had no idea you could self-publish a book. I also had no idea that the books I was writing had a specific genre they belonged to. Both of those things were totally life changing for me.

Right now I’m reading The Mourning Hours by Paula Treick DeBoard. My girlfriends and I have a “book club” which is really just a lame excuse to get out of the house for a few hours and have a few drinks, but it’s what we’re reading this month!

Q3.  Paxton is definitely book boyfriend material. What was he like to write as a character and do you have a favorite scene with him?

A. Writing Paxton was a fun challenge – I’ve never had trouble writing from a male POV but some of the scenes when he was at home in Venice were a struggle. I wanted to make that life authentic which meant I had to try to figure out how to speak like Latino “homeboy”. I’m a white girl living in Minnesota… just saying.

Paxton is probably my favorite character from all of my books, published and unpublished, and I totally fell in love with him so I have a lot of favorite Paxton scenes. But if I had to choose, in Part of Me I would say it was the series of scenes in chapter 17. When he was face to face with Dylan he showed me exactly why he was the dominant male. When he and Jessa went to the diner it was the first time he confronted her about their relationship and I liked how he dealt with her and that we got to see his playful side. And then he brought her home and those two scenes, for me, exposed how tender and sensitive he was and made him completely vulnerable. In Inside of You it was the epilogue. Paxton constantly surprised me with all of the facets of his personality and also how deeply he respected, loved and cared for Jessa and I think there is a little bit of all of that in the epilogue.

Q4. Pax and Jess are both such deep and intense well developed characters, and you did a great job of showing their good sides and bad. What do you feel are their best and worst qualities?

A. Thank you for saying that. My stories are character driven, I don’t know how to write any other way, so it’s obviously important to me that they are well developed and believable, so I appreciate that comment!

I’m just going to make a disclaimer and say that I am so immersed in my character’s heads that it’s hard to see them from an outside perspective so there is a possibility I might get this question wrong!
In my opinion, Paxton has a lot of great qualities. Overall, I would say that the juxtaposition of his hard exterior and his damaged but caring and sensitive core is the basis of all of his good qualities. He follows his heart. He’s forgiving and understanding. He’s passionate. He can appreciate what he has and see his past for what it is. He’s able to live in the moment.  He’s multitalented! Probably his biggest strength, and sometimes his biggest weakness, is that he is completely devoted to the people he cares about the most which would obviously be Jessa, but also his dad. As far as his bad qualities go,  for sure he avoided his past and a lot of his problems. He has the ability to separate his worlds and therefore shuts people out. He’s impulsive, has an addictive personality and tunnel vision. He swears… A LOT.

I don’t know if I can separate Jessa’s good qualities from her bad ones. She’s a survivor but her method of survival is to shut down her emotions. She is independent and self-reliant which also means she doesn’t think she needs anyone. She is confident and believes she knows who she is and what she wants, yet one of her worst qualities is her insecurity. Her other worst quality is her inability to trust. At the core of Jessa is her desire to be loved yet she is blind to this fact so, for me, her willingness to reconsider who she is and open herself up to change is her best quality. That’s not to say that the long process she went through to try to get there wasn’t frustrating (the girl is stubborn) but, for Paxton, she tried.

Q5. What’s next on the writing front? Any plans for another set of books on characters we’ve already met?  Any chance to see Paxton and Jessa say 5 or 10 years down the road?

A. When you finish a book and your character's story is complete, I’m pretty sure you are supposed to feel happiness and relief but I didn't feel that way with Paxton and Jessa. I wasn't ready to let them go and my mind still wanders to them quite often and I think about their lives and what they are doing. But, no, there are no plans to write another Paxton and Jessa book or any kind of companion novel with minor characters from this series. Sometimes I wish I would have written a prequel about their life together in River Bluff. The prologue in Part of Me was a pain in my ass because I wrote at least four different options - there were so many scenes from that year that I wanted to share.  I’m still not positive I chose the right one!

As far as what I am working on, I have three complete novels that I wrote before I ever published my first book that I keep saying I’m going to go back to and edit and clean up and publish but, for me, the editing process is painful because what I really want to be doing is writing about the characters that are developing in my head. Currently, there are three very complicated and intriguing people living there whose lives involve a lot more social and psychological issues than I’m used to writing. I’ve written a couple chapters of that book, which doesn't necessarily mean I’m going to finish it, but I’m dying to sit down and see what these characters are going to do and I have a feeling it’s what I’ll end up publishing next.

Thank you so much Haven!

About Haven Francis:
My family and I still hang out with my parents every week just because we want to. My room in their house is still filled with a childhood full of books and writing journals… it makes me realize that family and books are, and have always been, vital in my life.

In college my love of both of these things grew when I met a quiet, totally hot, artist who would eventually become my husband and I read, “The Bell Jar”, by Sylvia Plath. If, after reading this statement, you are anticipating semibiographical stories of depression from me, you will be greatly disappointed, but that book really did change my life. I promptly became a double major, adding English literature to my fine arts degree. After graduation I took a great job restoring art, but I eventually found my way into the world of professional writing where I was able to travel the world forecasting trends in the home furnishing industry.

When my first child was born my focus took a drastic turn and I happily gave up my career to be home with her. All of my creative outlets were put on the back burner for several years and then one day... I started writing again. It was exhilarating to write my first book that I hope to publish one day if I can ever whittle it down to an acceptable length. That book was the first of many. Some are unedited, some are far too long, some are only half finished, one is lost completely, four are available on Amazon!

As a wife and mother who left her early twenties behind long, long ago, I have a slightly embarrassing fascination with the period of life that exists within the New Adult bubble – the years that sit awkwardly between childhood and adulthood when nothing is certain, lots of mistakes are made, falling in love is inevitable and you struggle to find yourself. For me, it’s a fun place to escape to and I hope my readers feel the same way!

RELEASE BLITZ: Hostage by N.S. Moore

My life is split into two realities. Before Code. And after him.

The first time I saw him, he walked into my father’s bank with the strut of a man who knows exactly what he wants. I saw in him a fearlessness that I desperately wanted, needed, craved as much as my next breath.

Because I was watching him, I knew immediately when he pulled out a gun, aimed it at the ceiling, and fired three shots.

And that is the way I mark my life—before that moment and after it. Before, when I tried to be agreeable, tried to be admired, tried to be pretty, tried to make sure everyone liked me. Tried to shake myself of shame. And after, when all of that fell away. When I just didn’t care anymore.

Before Code. And after him.

I didn’t know then what he would be to me. I didn’t know how he would transform the fabric of my existence. I didn’t know he would move me, reshape me, mold me into someone else, someone I wanted to be.

Afterwards, he would become my lover, my savior, my hope, and my strength.

But, before that, he was my hostage-taker.

Excerpt from Hostage

If it were me, I’d dump the hostage and then make a run for the Mexican border. But I figure maybe he thinks I’m the only leverage he has if he gets trapped.
Then he grabs me and pulls me to his side, keeping his arm around me. Maybe to someone else, it looks like we’re in a romantic clench, but his arm is so hard around my ribs that it almost hurts.
I know my own strength, and it’s nothing compared to how strong this guy is. There’s no way I’m going to be able to pull away from him.
“Walk,” he grits out, forcing both of us forward.
So we walk that way. Right along a pleasant, downtown street. Like we’re so in love we can barely keep our hands off each other.
Or like one of us has been taken hostage.
It’s all pretty surreal, when I think about it. Mostly, I’m too scared to do much thinking.
No one seems to be paying attention to us. I hear a lot of sirens, so I assume help has arrived at the bank. It would nice if help could arrive for me too.
We turn a corner, and I see a couple of uniformed police officers walking toward us. I can’t believe my luck. If I can get their attention, maybe they can shoot this guy and I can get free.
There’s not much I can do except say something, so I open my mouth to call for help.
I just start to make a sound when the guy pushes me back against an SUV parked on the curb and covers my mouth with his.
It hurts. He moves so abruptly and so roughly that it hurts when my shoulder blades hit the hard metal of the car. I can’t even breathe because his mouth is over mine. I can’t move because his lean, strong body is holding mine trapped.
My heart, my pulse, my vision is all pulsing with fear, surprise, and helplessness. My body is hot and cold at the same time. My arms are trapped between our bodies, but I can use my fingers and I claw at his shirt.
Then suddenly I can breathe. He’s torn our lips apart, although his face is still directly in front of mine and his body still pushing into mine. “Little bitch,” he mutters, his eyes flashing anger. “Don’t even think of doing something like that again.”
I open my mouth, and I’m not sure if it’s to scream or to snap back a reply. It doesn’t matter because his mouth has claimed mine again.
It’s not even really a kiss. It’s hard, punishing. And his hand slides down my bare thigh and pulls my leg up, like he’s really into the kiss. He’s mad at me, so I can’t imagine that he really is. He’s probably just putting on a show for the cops, who must be walking by us right about now.
I’m pretty well experienced with kisses, but this kiss isn’t anything like I’ve had before. My stepfather would kiss me when he came to my bed at night. They were always light and gentle—some sort of brutal mockery of tenderness. Guys always kiss me before they fuck me—usually kind of sloppy and like they want to get them over with so they can get to the main course.
I’ve never been kissed hard and rough and punishing like this.
I don’t like it. At all. I hate this guy like nothing else for the way he’s treating me.
And I hate him even more because my body is reacting.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Nicole Simone

5 Questions with Author Nicole Simone

Q1. How did you get into writing? How do you pick your topics? And what are your favorite aspects of penning a novel?

 A. My entire family are writers so it was hard not to follow that same path. Still, for years I fought against my love of the written word and thought about becoming a psychologist. Halfway through my junior year in college, I realized staying up till 2:00 am writing novels instead of doing homework was a sign. Two months later, I switched my major to creative writing.

As corny as it sounds, I don’t pick my topics, they pick me. My last five novels are based off a newspaper article, real life or a dream I had. The beauty of being a writer is that anything and everything can spur inspiration. That has to be my favorite part of penning a novel. Those beginning stages when the characters are taking shape and you have no idea what journey your about to embark on. For me, I write by the seat of my pants so I’m just as surprised as the reader when a fork in the road is presented.

Q2. Love of a Rockstar offers a different perspective on the rock lifestyle as it focuses on the family left behind and having to choose between career and family. What was your inspiration for the story and this angle of those left behind during life on the road?

A. My boyfriend is the Bass player and singer in a band called Boxhoused. While they are not currently touring at the moment, I always wonder what will happen when they do. Will the separation be too much? Can I handle the adoring fans? So on and so forth. Love of a Rockstar was formed out of those questions.

Q3. What kinds of music inspire you? Who are some of your favorite bands?

A. All kinds of music inspire me. Seriously, I’m not picky but lately my selection has felt kind of stale. If anybody has suggestions on what I should listen to next, please chime in.

Q4. What is your favorite scene from the book?

A. My favorite scene from Love of a Rockstar is when Luke shows up at Marlene’s door, desperate to see his daughter and wanting to win back the love of his life. You can feel the regret about the life Luke has chosen in every word he utters. It’s heartbreaking!

Q5. You have a new book out, The Accidental Kiss. Any plans for a sequel to Love of a Rockstar? Perhaps with Camille and Jonathan where we’d see more of Marlene and Luke in their next phases of life???

A. There is a strong demand for a sequel but at the same time, people aren’t the biggest fans of Camille due to her actions in Love of a Rockstar.  However, I wasn’t quite ready for the story to end either! Love of a Firefighter is about Camille but with a plot I feel very few people will expect. Keep a lookout for it early 2015.

Thanks Nicole and let us know when Love of a Firefighter  is ready for release.

On Tour with The Five Guys...

Love of a Rockstar by Nicole Simone

4.5 Stars

Marlene Parker and Luke Anderson were an item from the time she was seventeen till she got pregnant at twenty, him twenty-two, and he left her at nine months to go on the road and make it big.

So when she sees him in the hotel lobby (her place of employment) for the first time he incites in her both love and hate, and she does what any woman scorned and not wanting to face her ex would do…she hides in the bathroom.

But she can’t hide from their past relationship for long. Now four years later, Luke has realized that life on the road is lonely, and he made the biggest mistake of his life walking away.

Told from Marlene’s point of view, I was pulled in from the very beginning. You can feel M’s heartache and her dilemma. She shares a past and a child with Luke, not to mention a still current attraction; but he walked out on her and their daughter and hasn’t seen them since. She also has a new, stable boyfriend in her life that can offer what Luke hasn’t.
“If this were a Nora Roberts movie on Lifetime, this would be the scene when our laughter would peter out and we would realize we loved each other, always and forever. While rain fell down upon us, we’d seal our love with a passionate kiss. Unfortunately, real life was hell of a lot more complicated than a sappy romantic movie.”
On one hand, you want Marlene to tell him “too bad” when he wants back in her and their daughter’s life after abandoning them. On the other hand, it doesn’t take long to realize that Luke is rather sweet and endearing. I didn’t know how Nicole Simone was going to pull it off, but she does. I thought Luke would have to be the world’s biggest louse for walking out on his pregnant girlfriend, but instead Luke turns around to be one of those adorable rocker book boyfriends. “Daddy Luke” and “domestic, dinner cooking Luke” are really sweet and hot.

Both characters are very likable and down to earth. The story a wonderful job of illustrating Marlene’s predicament between following her heart and risking getting broken again vs. choosing the safe and responsible guy who can fulfill her career dream and won’t leave her but who she may never fall in love with. She also has to take into account her daughter and what’s best for Nil. The story is just complicated enough that I think most readers could put themselves in Marlene’s position and realize what a difficult choice it would be to make.

There are confrontations between Luke and Marlene, and I liked how she’d let him have it, but then they’d come back together. It wasn’t a drawn out screaming match which showed how there were still strong feelings of love there. He also didn’t make excuses for what he did, and he accepted his mistakes. I think that helps the reader overlook the magnitude of what Luke did a little bit.

I found the story very engaging and I honestly couldn’t put it down, reading it all in one sitting. I occasionally craved a chapter or two from Luke to get his perspective and maybe a few more loves scenes since there is so much sexual tension brewing between them.

The inclusion of Marlene’s family’s perspectives, particularly the other females in her life, was a nice touch. Her grandmother’s personal tales of love was cute as Marlene has to weigh out what’s best for her while tackling an age old question of what qualities/elements make for the best marriage.

The rock star perspective in this book focuses on the pitfalls of success and being on the road while your family is left behind at home, and it’s an often not written about plot point, but a valid one none the less. This is also a story of making amends and following your heart. The story has touches of humor and a bit of excitement towards the climax. Luke only has four days in town so there’s the lingering question (and suspense) of what’s going to happen/what is he going to do when it’s time to go. However, the story wraps up nicely at the end and where things go from there was firmly implied. HEA. No cliffhanger. Stand-alone novel.

BOOK REVIEW: Dirty Little Mistake by Amber Rides

Dirty Little Mistake by Amber Rides

4 Stars

Brenna Cooper has a little problem. It’s growing inside her, and the next-door neighbor who is responsible for it knows nothing about it.  What seemed like passionate sex with a hot guy quickly turned cold the next morning when Breena woke to a ceiling of poster girls and a floor of other chics’ panties.  All she wanted to do was forget it ever happened, but now she must not only face her situation but deliver the news.

Out to win the heart of Ian, the man-whore whose room she woke up in, Breena enlists the help of Ridley James, Ian’s roommate and cousin. But things get even more complicated when Breena, otherwise known as Pancake to Ridley, feels a stronger connection to Ridley than Ian.

Ridley is a sexy book nerd chef. Breena is a pre-school teacher.
“You spend all day finger painting with monkeys. Why wouldn’t you want to come home to an ape like Ian?” —Ridley
Their scenes together are cute and they have some humorous banter. But both Breena and Ridley have difficult pasts that they still struggle with. Oh when Ridley’s story comes out it’s a bit of a tear-jerker. Otherwise, the book is light-hearted and the narrative has fun playing on a theme of mistaken identity.

Can Ridley keep his feelings in check as he helps Breena get her three dates with his cousin? Can Breena keep her jealousy in check when they double date and she meets the girl Ian set Ridley up with? Will Breena confess her situation to Ian or Ridley first? What led good-girl Breena on her drinking spree in the first place that night?

Told via Breena and Ridley’s alternating point of view, Dirty Little Mistake is part of the Dirty Series but it is a standalone book.

As a tasty bonus, 2 recipes are included.  Ridley’s Strawberry Cream Cheese Turnovers and Breena’s Cookies n’ Cream Cupcakes. Mmmm….what better way to enjoy a HEA than with a sweet treat?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Selena Laurence

Five Questions with Author Selena Laurence

Q1. First let’s talk just writing in general. Do you have a certain process—outlines, times of day that the ideas flow best, etc?

A. I usually write in the afternoon. Right now I'm doing 2k words a day five days a week, and I often sprint with an online group (write as fast as you can for thirty minutes straight). I can get 1700-2000 words in the ninety minutes at my kids' soccer practice. LOL

Q2. Since the Lush series is set around a band, what music influences you? What are your favorite bands?

A. I'm easy to please. Right now I love Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Stevie Rae Vaughn, Lukas Nelson (Willie's son), Lorde, and Florida Georgia Line.

Q3. Joss is such a well developed character—he’s tormented; he’s deep; (he’s also pretty hot!) How did you come up with him? Is he based on anyone you know or a rock star you admire?

A. Thanks for all of that! And no, he's not based on anyone. He looks a lot like Jared Leto in my head, but I don't know anything about Jared Leto as a person. Joss is the character that came to me the easiest and just flowed. He popped into my head out of nowhere, and he was pretty much fully formed. He's the most real to me, and I think he's probably some deep hidden part of me!

Q4. The story has a great balance of fun scenes (Joss’s panty rant to the driver), poignant scenes (the big reveal), and some brewing sexual tension scenes (the pool). What was your favorite scene to write?

A. You know, I don't usually have favorites. I did like the panty rant, and the one where Joss says, "Welcome to rock and roll baby" or something like that. Sometimes I crack myself up. Not sure if anyone else thinks it's funny, but it keeps me entertained. ;)

It was! That was a great line and such a rock star thing for him to say to her!

Q5. I would definitely like to read more about Joss and Mel to see them negotiate all the plans they
outline at the end and the new adventures they undertake. Any plans for another book focused on them?  And what can you tell us about Lowdown and Lush (#3) and A Lush Reunion (#4)?

A. I don't have another book about Joss and Mel planned, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. All things are possible with me. I'm a pretty spontaneous gal. lol

Lowdown and Lush is being written right now and what I'll tell you is that it reveals all of Mike's secrets, so you'll finally understand his sometimes crappy behavior. As for Lush 4, I hope it'll wrap up everyone's loose ends, and provide the ultimate HEA for the entire band and their girls. I have thought of some possible spin offs from Lush into another series, so if that happens it'll be set up in Lush 4.

Thanks so much! We'll definitely be looking out for the next books.

BOOK REVIEW: A Lush Betrayal by Selena Laurence

The Book-Bosomed blog's is rockin' this Fall with a rocker romance festival featuring 10 fictional bands. Vote for your favorite and check out the others on our poll posted on the right side bar of the blog and on our Facebook page.

This week's featured band is Lush! Meet Joss Jamison and his tumultuous crew today. Tomorrow check out our interview with author Selena Laurence!

On Tour with Lush! Show starts now...

A Lush Betrayal (Lush #1) by Selena Laurence

4.5 Rockin' Stars

27 year old Lush front man Joss Jamison’s life just isn’t going right. His A/C is broke, he’s being showered with thongs thrown at his head, and he can’t get himself out of the funk he’s been in since his big “betrayal.”

Mel DiLorenzo, 24, isn’t fairing much better. She’s been screwed over by her professor (literally) and her graduate career is in jeopardy. Lucky for her, her sister’s fiance is a member of Lush, and Tammy is the unofficial manager. Tammy sets Mel up with a sweet photography gig documenting the famous band for their summer tour. It could be just what she needs to salvage her photojournalism career except two things quickly become apparent—the gig may or may not be so sweet with tensions running high among the band mates and there’s the attraction she feel towards Joss, one that is not sanctioned by her big sister.  Joss meanwhile used to think he was in love with Tammy, but one night that still haunts him and one look at her sister later, and Joss has a new set of feelings to face.

This is a very well written rock band story that not only follows the pairing (through alternating 1st person POV) of Mel and Joss, but also the woes of the band after years of touring, fame, and problems of substance abuse have taken their toll.

Joss Jamison is the gem of the book as the lead singer with a tortured soul, tired of notoriety and full of self-loathing after a one night hook up with his best friend’s girlfriend while Walsh was in rehab. Joss, struggling to come to terms with his betrayal, soon discovers that Mel is a new light to his darkened world of guilt and loneliness. But the secret of his and Tammy’s indiscretion looms over their heads. Meanwhile, Mel has her own embarrassing baggage.

I really felt bad for the way Joss absorbed way more of the blame than Tammy and yet it took two to tango. Tammy was most definitely not my favorite person. I also felt there had to be more flaws in Tammy and Walsh’s relationship (that Joss viewed as so perfect) which first lead Walsh to drink and then Tammy to stray. But Walsh and Tammy get their own story in the sequel, For the Love of a Lush.

Can Joss and Mel attempt a relationship without causing further conflict and turmoil among the band?  How will Joss react when he learns Mel’s secret? Will Mel get caught in the crossfire when Joss and Tammy’s secret is exposed?

A Lush Betrayal has a well developed and well paced plot, solid characterization, no cliffhanger, and a HEA. There is plenty of sexual tension between Joss and Mel, and Joss definitely rocks the sexy factor:
Welcome to rock and roll, baby.’ I say as I grab her by the wrists, pull them above her head, and plunge inside of her.”
